Free Breakfast & Lunch Ending May 27
NKC Schools Families:
The federal waiver and funding that allowed us to provide free meals for all students is ending on the last day of school. After Friday, May 27, NKC Schools will no longer be able to offer free meals for all.
Beginning in June, students not participating in the free and reduced program will be required to begin paying for meals again. Students already approved for free and reduced meals for 2021-22 will be automatically approved for free meals in summer school and into the first 30 days of next school year, 2022-23. A new application must be completed each year. Those who have not yet applied are encouraged to do so.
If you believe that you might qualify for free or reduced meals, fill out an application online as soon as possible:
- Families should complete the 2021-2022 application for the upcoming summer school session. This application is available now here: https://frapps.horizonsolana.com/NORK01
- Families should also complete the 2022-2023 application for the upcoming school year that begins in the fall. This application will be available beginning July 1.
- More information and help for the application process is available here.
Through a program unrelated to the waivers, the following sites will serve free meals for all during June summer school only: Antioch, Briarcliff, Clardy, Crestview, Eastgate, Gashland, Gracemor, Lakewood, Maple Park, Meadowbrook, North Kansas City HS, Oak Park, Topping, West Englewood, Winnetonka and Winnwood.
Meal prices for all other June 2022 summer school sites are set at the following rates:
Lunch
Elementary: $2.80
Secondary: $3.05
Employees & Visitors: $3.95
Milk: $0.55
Breakfast
Elementary: $1.45
Secondary: $1.50
Employees & Visitors: $2.20
The free and reduced meals program offers many benefits beyond nutrition for participating families, including fee waivers, activity scholarships and school supplies. We encourage all families to take advantage of this option if eligible.
Congratulations to our recent Superstars!

- Friday, September 2, 2022 will be a full-day professional development day with no student attendance.
- Friday, April 14, 2023 will be a full-day professional development day with no student attendance.

The Late Start Thursday schedule will continue for the 2022-23 school year. Thank you to all who shared input on the survey given in late March. Responses demonstrated an even split in preference for late start Thursdays in comparison to other options. Many comments also highlighted this year as being unusual due to COVID, stating a desire for consistency. In addition, we know many families may have already made childcare arrangements for the upcoming year. Suggestions for improved use of the time will be considered and applied. NKC Schools will continue to work with our staff and families to determine how future adjustments to this schedule would best serve our 21,000 students.
Portrait of a Graduate
Beginning this year, North Kansas City schools are implementing Portrait of a Graduate initiative. This program is designed to teach students different life skills that they can use to be successful. This month’s skill focuses on balancing all of the competencies that we have learned throughout the previous months this school year!
