A Note from Mrs. Thexton
We had a wonderful 1st week back! It was a long and busy week, but we were very productive and the students were well rested and ready to go! We spent the early part of the week reviewing classroom routines and procedures and enjoyed a week of Telling Time boot camp!
Lots of important information in this week's newsletter. Please pay special attention to the information about a significant change in morning drop off procedures.
Golden Sneaker
1C received the Golden Sneaker award from Mr Pratley for the class who has work hard, followed instructions and helped one another in PE for the month of December! It is a real honor to win this coveted award! In addition to getting to house the trophy for a month, we also earned an extra PE class! This class will take place this Monday, January 11. Please be sure to send students in their PE clothes on Monday!
New Entry to Campus Procedures
Starting January 17th, 2016 there will be some changes for students and parents entering the ASD Campus supporting student safety.
All students will be required to scan their Dragon Wristband entering and exiting the campus. It is recommended that you remind your child to wear their wristband daily. Replacement Dragon bands may be purchased at the front desk of the Administrative entrance for 50 qr. 1st grade students will bring home their Dragon band on Thursday, January 14. Your child's dragon band will be labeled with their name by a key tag. We kindly ask parents to keep this label on the wrist band for easy identification.
Parents and domestic staff will not be permitted through Gate 5 for morning drop off. Students may enter through Gate 5 using their wristbands and teachers and administrators will be there to supervise starting at 7:40 AM. Parents wishing to accompany their children to classes are asked to enter through Gates 8 & 10. However, 1st graders are reading to come to class independently. This is the perfect time to change YOUR morning routine to allow that independence, unless it is absolutely necessary that you come in for other reasons.
Pick-up procedures will remain the same, parents will be able to enter and exit the campus through Gate 5 from 2:45 - 4:15 PM. Pick up procedures for PACT Tuesdays and our Pre-K Students will also remain the same, parents will be able to enter through Gate 5 at 12:15 PM.
We kindly ask parents and guests to enter through Gate 8 during the school day.
We thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we work to keep our school safe and continue the improvements to the ASD campus.
Social Studies Project
Starting this week, 1st grade students will begin working on a project for our Social Studies unit, The World Around Us. Students are learning about 4 different ecosystems: Tundra, Desert, Grassland and Rain Forest. Each student has selected one ecosystem for which they will research and prepare a project, either a poster or a diorama. Again, students get to decide which project they wish to complete. Students will represent the weather/temperature, the types of homes found in that ecosystem, what clothing people would wear there, what plants and animals are found there. These projects will be completed at school, however, students are welcome to bring in materials from home that they might like to use for their project. Materials might include:
*Shoe Box
*Legos people
*Sugar cubes and/or cotton balls for students researching Tundra
*Small plastic animals appropriate for your child's selected ecosystem
*Clay or play-doh
*Other craft items as needed.
I have colored paper, craft sticks, and a variety of craft materials for students to choose from, but students are welcome to bring things you already have at home. It is not necessary to go out and purchase any materials for this project! Thanks in advance!
