Parenting Corner (Family Connections 11/19)
Things don’t always go smoothly and sometimes we have conflict in our homes (especially around the holidays). Here are a few tips that may help your family work through the conflict while maintaining relationship.
*Perception is reality! Trying to convince someone that you are right and they are wrong is an unnecessary waste of energy and accomplishes little! Set up space in which each person involved has an opportunity to share their perception of the situation. Do not interrupt and do not judge! This is how they actually see it, so deal with what it is they have experienced in their own mind.
*Decide what the overall goal is. Is it to stop all the noise and chaos? Is it to find some peace? Is it to hear and be heard? Giving each person involved (and that includes those who have witnessed, but weren’t directly involved) an opportunity to be heard and to hear often lessens the chaos and noise.
*Keep calm or step away until you are calm. Does yelling truly solve a situation? Probably not. While it might get someone’s attention, it often just adds to the chaos and shows a loss of control.
In the next Family Connection we’ll explore the Compass of Shame to get a better understanding of why we react the way we do!
Help Wanted: Cafeteria Courtyard Beautification!
PTO Movie Matinee (December 11th 1pm-4pm)
Enjoy an afternoon running errands or relaxing while your child has fun at the movies AND help support your MVES PTO at the same time! Send your child with a water thermos and a comfy blanket or towel to sit on during the movie. Two movies will be shown (one geared for older elementary students and the other for younger students). We will use both the gymnasium and the cafeteria to show both movies simultaneously. A snack will be provided. Please consider donating whatever you wish for this fun event. This fundraiser will directly support our MVES community. You can pay now using Venmo (@Robyn-Kondrad) or PayPal (rlkondrad@gmail.com). You may also pay on the day of the event using cash, check made out to MVES PTO, Venmo, or PayPal. Register here by December 9th: https://forms.gle/nA1E5SJYJ3F6ZTig7

Cardboard Tubes Needed
Our STEM Lab is running low on cardboard tubes. If you have any paper towel or toilet paper tubes you could donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Items can be sent to Mrs. Cherry in the STEM Lab. Thanks so much!
From the School Nurse...
As COVID numbers in our area are rising we need to come together as a team to keep our children healthy and safe.
DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF:
They have to take any medications to make them feel better or reduce fever
Have had a fever of 100.4 or higher in the last 24 hours
they have a bad cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, a runny nose that will soil more than 2 masks per day
Someone in your household is sick and being tested for COVID
If you think that you have been exposed to COVID DO NOT send the child to school without consulting the school first.
If you are unsure of household contact or have any questions if your child should attend school please call the office at 540-438-1965 and ask to speak with the Nurse.
Please refer to the following Daily Home Screening tool before sending your child.
MASKS
Face coverings are required to be worn indoors at all times, in accordance with the state public health order date August 12, 2021, other than mask breaks and designated eating times. Face coverings are to be worn regardless of social distancing. Teachers will help/train students, as needed, to wear face coverings according to these guidelines. Parents are responsible for providing students with face masks.
Students that do not comply with wearing a face covering will be sent to the office. If the issue cannot be resolved, the student will be placed in an area distanced from others to wait until a parent picks them up.
Attendance
Parent Portal
The parent portal is an online portal accessible anywhere on the web that parents can log in to and see all of their children in one place, their grades, assignments, scores, attendance, schedules, and teacher comments for each school your children attend.
Parents need to contact the school to get access information to create an account in PowerSchool.
