Walker Literacy Center 2019

Where a little kindness educates readers

Walker Literacy Center 501(c)(3)

The Walker Literacy Center is a nonprofit working to lift up the children of Detroit through the power of literacy. We offer free after school and summer literacy instruction to children ages 6-10 years old.

This summer we opened our doors to 18 great kids. All 18 kids grew as readers and writers. The average kid grew 2 reading levels! We are so proud of them.

Evidence of our Kids Growth

This 6 year old started the summer knowing 0 sight words and not knowing the difference between a letter and word. This video is her first read of a level B book. She ended the summer at a level C on grade level!

The video below is a 7 year old describing why she loves reading!

We are seeking local restaurants to donate meals for our Thursday family dinners. Every Thursday we would like to provide our students and their families dinner.

The purpose of these meals is to build connections and relationships with the families of our students. During these meals our staff will provide tips on how parents can support their learning at home.

Approximately 20 children and 20 adults.

We will pick up meal.

All restaurants will get a thank you on our Website, Twitter and Facebook pages.

This summer Supino Pizzeria donated pizza dinner! Thank you Supinos!

Ice Cream Man Visits the Center

On our last day of the summer session we had the local ice cream man visit the center. The kids were so excited. This was the first time some of them have ever purchased ice cream from an ice cream truck!
