Parsons celebrates Black History Month

Though it began as just a week-long celebration in 1926, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Well, we 'seized" the opportunity at Parsons by hosting our 2nd Annual Black History Month Door Decorating Contest. Each classroom was challenged to create a door presentation that honored the theme, "A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture". Doors were judged on their creativity, attention to theme, student participation, and design. It was not an easy feat for our 6 judges because all 30 doors were worthy of acknowledgement. BUT, two doors stood out and the winners of the 2022 Black History Door Decorating Contest are Mrs. Melt's 4th grade class (First Place) and Mrs. Kennedy's Music class (Second Place).

A big thank you to all 6 of our door judges:

Peachtree Ridge High School senior earns 2022 Gwinnett STAR Student title

Congratulations to Chungin "Roy" Lee for being named Gwinnett County's STAR Student (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition). The STAR student honor is bestowed on the senior with the highest SAT score. As part of the recognition, the STAR student selects a teacher who has had a strong influence on his/her academic career. The Peachtree Ridge High School senior selected his Language Arts teacher, Adam Sherman, as his STAR Teacher. Congrats to Roy and a big thank you to ALL the teachers at Parsons Elementary, Hull Middle School, and Peachtree Ridge High School. LION PRIDE!

Birthday Celebration Policy

Parents,

Just a reminder of our birthday celebration policy. This can be found in our Student/Parent Handbook as well.

Birthday Celebrations

Because of allergies, students wishing to have a treat for their class should use the Ice Cream plan. This plan provides ice cream for every student in the class for $1 per student. Birthday parties are not allowed at school. Balloons, flowers, etc. cannot be delivered to children at school or taken home on the bus. Party invitations may not be distributed at school.

If you will ask the teacher how many students are in the classroom, you can send in money and let the teacher know which day that week you would like to purchase ice cream for the entire class in honor of your student's birthday. The students all get to choose which ice cream they would like and they receive it at lunch that day. Thank you for your understanding.

Mask Guidance

When students returned to in-person instruction on Jan. 6, masks were required due to a HIGH level of community transmission. The district’s updated mask guidance is based on community transmission as determined by the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). For the rest of the semester, families and staff will be notified via School Messenger each Monday afternoon about mask guidance for the rest of the week. Under the district’s current COVID-19 protocols, community transmission levels must be maintained at the MODERATE or LOW level for two consecutive weeks before district mask guidance transitions to “Strongly Recommended.”

*Note that staff and students returning early from COVID-19 isolation would be required to wear a mask through Day 10, regardless of community transmission rates and the district’s current masking guidance.

GMAS Spring Testing Dates

The Georgia Milestones EOG Elementary School Schedule is now available. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will take the GMAS beginning in April.

We will utilize this form to create the appropriate afternoon transportation pass. Please remember the GCPS Bus Rule: no passes will be issued for play dates, birthdays, weekend sleepovers, etc. For security reasons, we DO NOT accept transportation changes through phone calls or emails.

Student Check Out

Anyone checking out a child must present photo identification and be listed in our system as someone able to have access to the student. If you need to make changes to your list of approved emergency contacts, you may make changes on the Parent Portal or stop by the office to update this information. As a reminder, students may NOT be checked out after 3:00 PM. For assistance in updating contact information on the Parent Portal, please visit https://www.gcpsk12.org/Page/11430.
