Good Afternoon, CUSD.
The annual Coronado Schools Foundation Telethon is back! This time-honored tradition (35th annual!) will be held on Wednesday, March 23rd and is a major fundraiser for CSF in support of the STEM and Arts pathways programs serving every CUSD student. Without our generous donors at CSF we would not have our robust visual and performing arts programs, state-of-the-art STEM instruction and iLabs. Thank you to our community for supporting CSF and our students. See flyer below for details and watch live: csfkids.org/telethon
It’s always exciting when learners can engage with primary sources to enhance perspective, and this week students at CHS had that opportunity. Tam Hoang’s AP Language class is reading the novel ‘No-No Boy’ which tells the story of a Japanese-American in the aftermath of the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. Fortuitously, the Coronado Historical Association (CHA) is currently hosting a wonderful exhibit Uprooted: The Story of the Japanese Americans of Coronado. After reading the novel, Mr. Hoang’s students visited the museum and later watched videos of interviews from Japanese-American Coronado residents recounting their experiences leading up to and past the internment. Thank you, Mr. Hoang and CHA, for facilitating this multidisciplinary experience for our students!
An important reminder: statewide testing of students in grades 3-8 and 11 will begin after spring break. Many parents question whether or not their children should participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) testing. Here’s why it matters:
Federal law requires all districts to meet a 95% participation rate.
If that threshold is not met the academic indicator for the school will be negatively impacted.
The higher the academic indicator of your child’s school, the more desirable you are to a college admittance office.
High school students who wish to earn a State Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma are required to earn a score of 3 or higher on the CAASPP in English/Language Arts in addition to a passing score on the AP Spanish or French exam.
High school students who wish to earn a Golden State Seal of Merit on their diploma are required to earn a score of 3 or higher on the CAASPP ELA, Math, and CA Science tests.
Save money and time in college - the CSU uses your scores for college placement and to test out of certain English and Math courses in college.
Parents of students in grades 3-8 can use the annual test results to benchmark their child’s academic progress and/or identify areas of focus.
Teachers and administrators can use test results to tailor instruction in areas of need.
Results of the CAASPP testing are made public in the fall and we look forward to sharing with the community how well our students are performing on our state standards. Parents, please support your student (grades 3-8, 11) as testing across the district begins in April - June. If you have any questions please contact your school administrator.
Have a great weekend, CUSD!

Caught Being Awesome!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments during these trying times. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Amy Statezny brought the book fair back to Village Elementary and worked tirelessly to make it a special school-wide event. We appreciate the connections she has made with our students and the enthusiasm and love she displays not only through the week of book fair but all year long. Thank you, Mrs. Statezny!
- Allyson Heyen has been an invaluable part of my children’s education for the last three years. She has brought stability and professionalism to a sometimes chaotic situation by stepping in to teach classes as both a short-term and long-term substitute teacher on multiple occasions of which I am aware. I have to say that I breathe a sigh of relief when I hear her name associated with whatever the situation is that takes the usual teacher of a class out of the classroom. I know that either of my children are in good hands and will continue to grow in their understanding of the subject with her at the helm. Thank you Mrs. Heyen for not letting our kids skip a beat in this sometimes unpredictable world. Your flawless example of how to adjust to change is a great one for our kids!
- Julie Fox is a caring and detail-oriented teacher. She helps students learn content by meeting them where they are! Her enthusiastic efforts to support CHS students are admirable.
- Kristen Ereno is always there for her CTE students, making sure they have their classes for CHS or helping them with college. No matter what is going on her students come first! Every day you see how much passion she has for wanting her students to succeed every day.
- Michelle Evenson is an amazing asset to the CHS staff. She has gone above and beyond helping her students secure internships and has partnered with Safe Harbor Coronado for a remodeled Drug Store event. We are so grateful to have Michelle, she continues to give to her students and this community.
Click here to recognize an employee or volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference. Those who are "caught" will receive a copy of the positive words that were shared about them and a "Caught Being Awesome" decal. Please take a minute or two to brighten someone else's day!
