Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Sodus Spelling Bee, "March Mathness", and "Read 20" Updates
I hope that all in our school community were able enjoy a wonderful winter break! Contained in this newsletter are updates and pictures regarding the February Spirit Week, the Sodus Spelling Bee, and information about our "March Mathness" and "Read 20" initiatives in coming weeks.
2021 Sodus Spelling Bee:
Congratulations to 6th Grade student Caroline DeBadts for winning our 2021 Sodus Spelling Bee. Students in grades 5-8 completed in our annual spelling competition, with finalists competing in our auditorium on Wednesday, February 10. We had 4 Intermediate School students who qualified as finalists - 5th grade students Michael Chrisley and Simon Thomas, and 6th grade students Timothy Rowlinson and Caroline DeBadts. All of our Spelling Bee Finalists did an amazing job and have a lot to be proud of! We wish Caroline the best of luck when she competes in the Regional Spelling Bee in Newark on March 20.
"March Mathness" Competition: Our Intermediate School Improvement Team (ISIT) is sponsoring a friendly competition between homerooms in March for math fluency. A student's math fluency is measured by a students working knowledge of math facts - knowing his or her addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division calculations. Math fluency is a foundational skill in mathematics. Many students already complete short daily math fluency drills, but beginning on March 15 we will tracking student progress throughout the school. As students improve a level, a basketball will be placed outside of the homeroom on the wall. We will continue this daily until April 9, after which a winning homeroom will be announced for each grade level based on the percentage increase per student.
"Read 20" Initiative: We have been promoting our "Read 20" initiative since returning from the holiday break in January. The goal is to have each of our students, regardless of reading level, read with an adult at home at least 20 minutes each day. Ensuring that your child reads with an adult daily is one of the most important things our families can do to support your child's growth. Our Intermediate School Improvement Team is supporting this program because we understand how important it is for each child. Every week I am including articles and graphics that show the research on why this is so important, and offer strategies to help parents support struggling readers. In January we mailed home report cards along with information on your child's current grade level in reading and math based on the iReady diagnostic. Many of our students are struggling readers who are below grade level. The COVID-19 closure last spring has only made the gaps larger, and many parents have reached out to ask what they can do at home to support their child. Spending 20 minutes reading with your child daily is the one thing that will likely have the biggest impact on his or her growth over time. In this newsletter you will find articles supporting our "Read 20" initiative, and you can read past posts about "Read 20" in previous weekly newsletters posted in the Intermediate School Page of the Sodus website.
