CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
November 23th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
We were so grateful this week to have welcomed Guatemalan social activist and educator Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes to our school. Juan Pablo has been working hard over the last several years to bring education, opportunity, and dignity to his community in Guatemala. I was so impressed with the level of engagement our middle school students brought to the event. Many students asked thoughtful questions that demonstrated their love, empathy, and interest in social activism. I believe Juan Pablo's message will be memorable for our students and inform their beliefs and values as they become truly global citizens.
The week wrapped up with our Middle School Science Fair! Students demonstrated some excellent scientific thinking and curiosity. I look forward to sharing highlights in next week's newsletter.
I want to thank all the parents who attended Parent Information Session #2 on Thursday. I hope you left the discussion with some practical ideas on how to maintain trust and connection with your middle schooler as they progress through their adolescent years. If you were not able to make it, please find the presentation slides within the newsletter.
Registration for ASPs will end on Sunday 11/24. Parents will receive an email from me early next week indicating which after school clubs your child has enrolled in. Invoices for paid ASPs will be sent out the the first week of December. Please contact the MS Office if you have any questions.
Next week is a short week due to Thanksgiving break. On Thursday 11/28 students will attend class in the morning and then be dismissed before lunch at 11:30am. Buses will depart CDS at 11:45am.
Have a great weekend!

2019-20 Fill the Sleigh (Nov 18th - Dec 13th)
This year, we will be collecting everyday household items for The Holt Center in Ilsan. The Center is a residential care facility for around 300 residents, ranging in age from toddlers to adults, all of whom have some sort of disability.
Students are encouraged to bring in anything that goes in a house, from toiletries like soap and toothpaste to kitchen items such as ramen, rice, or canned food. All donations must be new and unused. If you have any questions about Fill the Sleigh, speak with a Student Council Representative. We are excited to see CDS Middle School Pioneering to Serve!

Morning Calm InstaRead
To encourage student participation, the library has created an InstaRead board with a short description for the 5 Chapter and 5 Middle School book nominees. After students read a book, they can come to the library and get a "InstaRead Like" sticker to put on the bulletin board. We hope that by seeing what their teachers and friends are reading, students will want to read these Morning Calm books and vote for their favorite!"

Parent Information Session #2
Formation of Ancient China
We've simulated the idea of the Mandate of Heaven and explored the three major philosophies of Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Now that the students have the concepts down, they are tasked with creating products that show their understanding; either by creating a children's book or a tri-fold of ancient China.

Can Math Teach Us How to Hold a Slice of Pizza?
Is there a right way or a wrong way to hold a slice of pizza so it doesn't flop over and cause the toppings to fall off?
According to the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777 – 1855), there is! It is so interesting to find math that you didn't know it was there. That is why I wanted to share this article that talks about Gaussian Curves and their applications in pizza, corrugated metal, grass, eggs, and more.
The article is linked here and titled: How a 19th Century Math Genius Taught Us the Best Way to Hold a Pizza Slice. I hope you enjoy!
