Greetings Parents:

Welcome to MHS. Home of the Monarchs! We want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2020-21 school year. We will be communicating by email, school website and social media throughout this school year and encourage you to check each venue at least twice per day for essential updates from MHS. We are appreciative of your participation in our virtual parent meeting on Tuesday, August 25th (Seniors and Juniors) and Wednesday, August 26th (Sophomore and Freshman). For those parents who were unable to join us, we look forward to your joining us in future meetings.


In this newsletter, you will find information that was discussed during our virtual class meetings and additional information that will be important to you as we move into September. If you have questions, please use our "Who to Contact" sheet to email the appropriate person as well as the listing of emails of all of the faculty and staff members of MHS. We are excited about all of the prospects of new learning that will take place this year. We are anxious about building greater relationships with you as the year progresses. Opt-Out Form or Hybrid (1 day per week)

Parents, please complete the opt-out form (attached) if you would like your child to continue his/her education virtually until the full return of students to school. Return to the school by September 1st through email, mail, or drop off on the table at the front of MHS.


Parents who would like their child to participate in the hybrid model (students attend one day per week) must send an email to pgoldsmith@csd2.org indicating they would like their child to attend MHS one day per week beginning September 14th no later than September 1st. Please include the child's name, grade level, and if they will need bus transportation to and from school. Please adhere to this deadline as planning is critical. Students WILL NOT be able to attend if previous notification has not been requested and approved through the school. Notifications will be mailed to parents by September 7th of the day your child will attend school.


All persons entering MHS will be required to wear a face mask or appropriate face covering at all times for the safety of other students and faculty and staff members. Students who are unable to wear a mask, will not be allowed to attend the hybrid sessions.

Dates for Senior Pictures are September 2-4, 2020. Each student has an appointment time and guildelines have been sent to all seniors by school email. If you have questions, please contact Lelia McCoy at lmccoy@csd2.org.


SCHOLARSHIP NEWSLETTER

The Scholarship Newsletter will be available and updated at the beginning of each month starting September 1st. Please be on the lookout on our website and facebook page for scholarship information. For information concerning scholarships, please contact Jessica Cato at jlcato@csd2.org.


RHODES GRADUATION SERVICES

Monday, October 12th-Seniors will be emailed a virtual video from Rhodes Graduation Services outlining the process for ordering senior supplies.


Tuesday, October 13th-Seniors may begin the ordering process through Rhodes Graduation Services. No money will be collected or receipted at MHS. All payments will be made directly to Rhodes Graduation Services. A $60.00 deposit is required.


Friday, October 23rd- Seniors will pick up supplies from the bus port from 2:00pm-3:30pm.

WIN ASSESSMENT

WIN Testing (Read to Work) assessment is a workforce education and development tool, comprised of three proctored assessments, Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information, leading to a work-ready credential. The results measure different kinds of employment-related skills. All 11th-grade students will test in the spring of 2021.


ACT AND SAT (SCHOOL DAY-ADMINISTRATION)

Juniors will choose to either take the ACT or SAT in the Spring of 2021 during the school day administration. There is no cost to students and this is NOT the same as the Saturday administration. Mrs. Bench will be sending out information to students as the date approaches.


CLASS RINGS

Students may place orders for class rings beginning October 20. The deposit is $60 and payable through RHODES GRADUATION SERVICES.


PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS

Ms. Hodge will be servicing students with last names A-J and Mrs. Daney-Wilson will service students last name K-Z.

ACT and SAT Information 2020-21

ACT Fee Waiver vouchers will be given out in the School Counseling Department by appointment. A mask must be worn when entering the building. Students are eligible for 2 fee waivers. If you utilized a fee waiver your Junior year, you will only be allowed one fee waiver for your Senior year.


SAT Fee Waiver codes will be emailed to students. It is important to keep the code confidential. Make sure vouchers are requested a week before registration deadlines for each test.

Congratulations to our very own Mrs. Lelia McCoy, MHS Teacher of the Year. Mrs. McCoy teaches in the English Department and also serves as the coordinator of the yearbook. Mrs. McCoy is well respected by students and her colleagues.

TESTING FOR 10TH GRADE STUDENTS

Students completed MAP testing this past week. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Bench.


The PSAT will be administered in October. The test is free for all 10th grade students. Additional information will be forthcoming.


ACADEMIC STATUS

Students who have less than 6 units (1 unit must be math and 1 unit must be English) is considered "behind" academically and should currently be enrolled in credit recovery through Edmentum. If you have questions about your status, please contact Ms. Hodge in guidance.

TIPS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • Log on to your classes everyday and on time.
  • Ask for help whenever you need it.
  • Complete all assignments to the best of your ability.
  • Ask questions in class.
  • Communicate with your teachers often.

WHAT IS TITLE I?

Title I is a provision of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, was created by the US Department of Education to distribute funding to schools and school districts with a high percentage of students from low-income families with the intention to ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.


MHS is a Title I school for the 2020-21 school year. A needs assessment was conducted in the Spring of 2020 and it was determined that MHS needs including the following, and funds would be expended in these areas:


  • Instructional supplies for math, English, science, and social studies.
  • Books for classroom libraries in English and Social Studies Classes.
  • Professional Development for teachers.
  • College and career readiness for students
  • Parental Engagement
  • Guidance Programs to include social-emotional learning
  • Instructional supplements such as Discovery Education, Achieve 3000, Aleks, and Edmentum.


Once the plan is approved through the South Carolina Department of Education, the plan will be made available for viewing on our school's website. If you have questions about how you can assist in the planning of Title I, please contact Mrs. P. Moultrie-Goldsmith, Principal.
