Week of January 21
Meet our New Counselor
Hi! I am Cara Olson, the new counselor at MTMS. I am so excited to be working with the 7th Grade Navigators, 8th Grade Contenders and Explorers. I grew up in the Shawnee area, attended K-State for my bachelor’s degree and then returned to the Shawnee area where I earned my master’s degree at Emporia State-KC. Over the last few years I have had the opportunity to work in the Blue Valley School District and complete school counseling field experiences/internships in Blue Valley, Gardner, Olathe and Spring Hill. When I’m not busy advocating for kiddos, I love spending time outdoors and with my family!
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions on how I can best support your student(s). I look forward to working with your family!
Sincerely,
Cara Olson : colson@usd232.org

From the Counselors
Hello, parents! The counselors (Mr. Anderson and Ms. Olson) will be starting a group to support students that are affected by divorce/separation. This weekly group will meet on Wednesdays during seminar for 5-6 weeks. Our intention with this group is to provide students a place to share their thoughts and feelings related to this topic. Students will be able to offer support to one another and share coping strategies to help manage emotions they may be experiencing. If you would like your son or daughter to be included in this group please have them stop by the counselor’s office to pick up a permission form. This group is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 20th. Please have permission slips turned in by Wednesday, February 13th. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mr. Anderson or Ms. Olson. J

Attendance
When reporting your student absent, due to illness, please leave a brief description of symptoms, such as, stomach issues, headache, fever, strep, flu. It helps to track illnesses in our building and for reporting to the health department, if needed.
It is district policy to keep your student home until symptom free/fever free for 24 hours without medication. It will help to prevent the spread of illness.
What if a doctor diagnoses your child with the flu? Current recommendations from the JOCO Health Department, KDHE, & USD 232 are exclusion from school for diagnosed influenza for 7 days following the onset of symptoms (from the day when the symptoms began…not the day the doctor gave the diagnosis.)
To aid countywide influenza tracking, please give details about your student’s illness. If your student has flu-like symptoms or has been diagnosed with flu, please be prepared to provide:
· Date symptoms started (and date of diagnosis if different)
· Date of flu shot, if received
· Type of flu (Influenza A, Influenza B, Influenza AB or type unknown)
