Cobra Strike
From the Desk of the Junior/Senior High School Principal
This past week was Custodian Appreciation Week!
Joe
Joe is a great go to for needing something done. He has been very handy with crazy projects this year. He has been rehanging the old plagues in the halls so they can be showcased with pride and he greets every challenge with a, "We can do that" and then it just gets done.
Troy
If ever there was a guy that gets things done when I come up with another crazy project, it is Troy. Here he was rehanging our banners when we were redoing the gym last year. When I ask him for a task I get the immediate sigh followed by, "that would be cool" and then it gets done.
Sheila
I literally had to surprise her to even get her to slow down enough to take a picture of her. She works incredibly hard to help our facility stay in tip top shape. I don't have a quote for what she says because I think she is a mind reader. She already knows what I am wanting and has it done before I can get to it.
Sometimes I try to be normal, but it gets boring so I go back to being me
Every year it goes the same. The mega heights that occur during Homecoming results in a bit of a down week, then its back to business as usual....well, as usual as Jackson Heights ever can be. We are always up to something around here. We had our first House Games this Friday, students went to manufacturing day at Sabetha, the little cheer clinic was "exhausting, but fun" according to Brandi with 63 girls in attendance. Oh and don't forget that Sam finally gave me a drum solo!!!
There is no such thing as normal at this school and I love it.
Aside from the fun, there are a few points of news for parents concerning parent/teacher conferences and next months First Friday. Read on for news.
As always there is too much for me to just talk about in this opening section so away we go...
Keep on making a difference.

Cobra Cup Standing
This week saw the first Quarterly Cobra Cup Games. This month, the Corn Fed Cobras hosted the house games with 6 different events. All students participated in the games in rotations that gave every member a chance to be part of the team.
Here are the results from the first Cobra Games announcing the winner for each event.
Free Throw Contest: Gold Rush
Tug-O-War: Gold rush
Escape Room: Triple G
Tower Building: Gold Rush
Battle Ship: Snake Kingz
Bucket Race: Snake Kingz
Overall Standings:
1st: Gold Rush
2nd: Snake Kingz
3rd: Triple G
Corn Fed Cobras did not compete but received points for hosting the games.
The top performers per house this week were:
Triple G: Eryn Davis for putting in extra time on her projects in classes.
Snake Kingz: Brooke Slipke for making a mistake. She mistook the calendar date for her 4H presentation to students, but took full ownership of it and was able to assemble a great presentation almost on the fly.
Gold Rush: Sabrina Streeter for baking cookies for the custodians and staff.
Corn Fed Cobras: April Slipke for her performance in middle school band and her positive interactions with students in class
as of right now, only 110 points separates 1st from 4th. It is still any houses game at this point.
Student Led Conferences
Parent Teacher conferences are coming up fast. October 19th to be exact. We will have conferences from 12:30-8:00 that day. We have made some changes to the format this year. In the fall we will be holding student led conferences that focuses on the present. Student will be presenting to their parents how their classes are going now and what their plan is to finish out the year strong. Be on the lookout over the next couple of weeks for an email with a link to sign up for SLC with your student's seminar teacher. I will post the entire list the week of the conferences so you can sign up for open slots on other class teachers to conference with them. This conference allows students to take ownership of their grades and performance this year and will give you a chance to discuss the overall plan to achieve success by the end of the semester.
The student led conference is good for one exemption at the end of the semester. Students can exempt one assignment that they have completed from their final grade in a class.

This is your public service announcement of the day.
You never know when the last time is that you will be able to pick up your son and hold him.
They grow up. Some day he won't want to cuddle up to you and sit on your lap on the couch. He will be too big to hold. You won't be the center of their universe. So you are aware, there is no hug like that of a child hugging their parent. My mother informs me that this feeling doesn't change even when you are getting a hug from your 42 year old son.
I cherish every hug and cuddle I can get. They will always be my bestest buddies.
Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.
