Pe and wellness news
PE NEWS
Every class made an effort at the PACER this week. For Grades K-2, it's a chance to gain experience with this fitness test and build confidence. For the 3rd-5th Graders, they are trying to make progress toward the Healthy Fitness Zone, to improve on a previous score that is already in the Healthy Zone, or simply improve on a previous score. The national norms for 4th Grade girls are 16-41 laps for the Healthy Zone and over 42 for High Fitness; for boys the 4th Grade norms are 24-61 laps for the Healthy Zone and over 62 for High Fitness. Third Graders would be a few laps below those ranges, and Fifth Graders a few laps above. We preceded the PACER with an appropriate warm-up and followed it with lay-up and dribbling practice. For those classes with two sessions, we did extra drills in dribbling, passing, and shooting. PACER make-ups were offered this week and next Monday.
WELLNESS NEWS
Malachi T and Ian H were 2 v. 2 basketball champions this week. Comgratulations to all the students who played in the tournament, and special thanks to Malachi and JJ for organizing the bracket. We had an AIM class challenge on Thursday to see which class could get the most students on the AIM course. On Sunday, the Wellness Committee is hosting a free, open gym at Peak Elite Gymnastics Academy from 12-2. Sign up with the link in the BITE or at school.
Adams parents’ community night
APA Community Night
The APA will be hosting another Community Night this month on Tuesday, January 28th from 6:30-7:30pm. Principal Martin will be there to share with us highlights and information about each of the grade levels and the APA Board will be on hand to share and lead discussions on our playground improvement plans. We’d love to have your input as we look to make some big purchases this year to better our outdoor play spaces!
Free child care will be provided in the Art Room.
We hope to see you there!
Library News
World Read Aloud Day is Feb 5th
To mark this event, Adams Library will be hosting reading volunteers during library from Mon Feb 3 through Friday Feb 7! Please contact echo.rue@corvallis.k12.or.us if you'd be able to come in as a guest reader during library time. We can work together to choose the book you'd be reading. If you want to read in your native language, this is encouraged! Please know we have access to books in English and other languages!
Want to know more about World Read Aloud Day? Here's a message from our state librarian, Jennifer Patterson:
The library community understands the importance of reading, both as a powerful tool for learning and a critical skill for kids to be successful in school and beyond (and it’s fun!). Currently, more than half of Oregon third-graders are reading below grade level, which is a significant issue for our communities. SMART Reading, a statewide children’s literacy nonprofit, is raising awareness about the importance of reading with kids in honor of World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 5, 2020.
World Read Aloud Day is an international observance celebrated by millions of people worldwide that aims to advocate for literacy as a fundamental human right. This year, SMART Reading has issued a challenge to get 10,000 Oregonians to take the Reading Matters pledge and read aloud with children in their lives on Feb. 5.
To take the pledge or learn more about SMART Reading and World Read Aloud Day, visit www.smartreading.org/world-read-aloud-day.

Cards and Magnets
Cards and Magnets Needs Your Help!
Each spring parents can purchase cards and/or magnets featuring their child’s artwork. This year we are forming a committee to help with each of the tasks necessary to continue this awesome tradition.
Groups of parents are needed to help:
• Photograph each students’ artwork
• Crop and size each image
• Assemble order forms
• Color-correct purchased images
• Cut, laminate and assemble magnets
• Print and fold cards
• Assemble orders for delivery
If you are interested in helping out, please click herehttps://signup.com/go/htchuhd and feel free to sign up for more than one part of the project. Photographing will begin in January, while the other tasks will be completed throughout the spring. Most jobs can be completed at your convenience. If you have any questions, please email Nicole and Sara at volunteeradams@gmail.com.
Box tops
Each Box Top clip is worth 10 cents...and they add up! There are 2 ways to collect and donate your Box Tops. Box Tops for Education is going digital, and in the transition they are accepting both clips and scans.
If your package has a traditional Box Top clip, cut it off and send it into school.
If your package has a Scan Your Receipt Box Top, download the free Box Tops for Education App, set your school for Adams Elementary School, and scan your grocery receipts. It's fast and easy!
The next Box Tops submission is due March 1st, but we will be accepting Box Tops all year.
OBOB
Practice Battles for OBOB have begun! Official Battles will begin February 10th and will be held during morning recess (9:45-10:05). It is double elimination so teams are still in it until they lose twice. We will announce our winner that will go on to Regionals on February 26th. Parents are welcome to come and watch but no video taping is allowed. Battles and locations will be posted on the glass display case. Remind your child to check the display case DAILY & keep on reading those BOOKS!!!
