FIRE AND YOU?
How to make a safe fire when you are lost
The Intro
Depending on where you are located there are different kinds wood. Depending on the wood the fire will come out differently. Some wood makes fire smoke more, some makes fire flame longer, and some wont light. So I am writing this to help open your mind to what to do and what not to do of firemaking.
Wood
There are two kinds of wood softwood and hardwood. Softwood is wood that is not seasoned and burns easily, but doesn't last very long. Hardwood is wood that is seasoned and burns long, but is harder to burn than softwood. Some softwoods are Yew, Fir, Pine, and Spruce. Some hardwoods are Applewood, Basswood, Birch, Buckeye, Cherry,Elm, and Maple.
Requirements
- Wood
- Rocks
- Sticks( 1 wide and long and another with a sharp point and strong.)
- Leaves/twigs/brush
- A lot of breath
- A lot of Strength
What To Do In Steps
- Gather your items. Which means try to find some softwood and heavy wood, sticks, rocks, and brush.
- Make a nest. A nest is a small dug out hole. Surround the hole with the rocks, and place the brush in the middle.
- Take the wide and long stick and place it laying over the hole while kneeing on one end of the stick. Now take the sharp stick and start making a long hole in the stick you are kneeing on. Be sure to make the hole stop at a certain point. What this will do will start creating fiction on the stick causing ashes to form.
- As the ashes start to form hopefully smoke will start to form.
- Once the smoke forms flip the stick over so the ash on it falls onto the brush inside the nest.
- One on the brush, blow onto it until it starts to ember and flame.
- Once a flame forms take the soft wood and hold it over the flame until it lights. Once lit add hardwood around the softwood. once the hardwood is lit you have successfully made a fire.
