6th grade G.R.E.A.T.
Spreading Joy
In the weeks leading up to the Winter Break, our 6th graders took the time to write and decorate holiday cards for residents of nursing homes in the area. The students had a great time and, I’m sure, made the holidays a little brighter for the people who received them.
The G.R.E.A.T Program!
This semester, all 6th graders are participating in the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Program. This program consists of a violence prevention curriculum that teaches students important skills to help them avoid gangs, violence, drug abuse, and crime. The purpose of G.R.E.A.T. Program is to help students develop beliefs and practice behaviors that will help them avoid destructive habits. During the G.R.E.A.T. lessons, students will be working closely with their G.R.E.A.T. Instructor, Officer Morris, who serves as a mentor and positive role model for the students. Thank you, Officer Morris! We are excited that our 6th graders get to experience the G.R.E.A.T. Program this year!
What ‘cha Reading?
Core Plus classes have started reading the novel, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle. It is the story of Meg Murray, a girl who is propelled on an adventure through time and space. Along with her younger brother, Charles Wallace and friend Calvin, she sets off to rescue her father.
Parents, as always, if you could please:
· Check grades and assignments on Skyward/Canvas weekly.
· If you see a missing assignment, communicate with your child and let them know it needs to be completed/turned in.
· Contact your child’s teacher with any questions/concerns if your child is struggling academically—We all want your children to be successful!
7TH Grade -Earth Science and more
8th Grade
Last year- more than any other- showed us that everyone can become overwhelmed at different points in our lives for a variety of reasons. As we return from break and hope for a better 2021, the 8th grade teachers wanted to provide our students with some techniques they can use when feeling overwhelmed. During this third quarter in Viking Time, students will be learning and practicing different techniques to help them relax, relieve stress, and feel more connected to the world in which they live. It is our hope that these strategies will not only help them in school but will help them throughout their entire lives.
This is also the time of year in which we start to help transition our students to thinking about high school. During the next several months, we will be talking about high school schedules, credits, and GPA. Students have already participated in interest and personality inventories in language arts classes. All parents should be aware that there will be a Freshman Parent Information Night currently scheduled for March 3 at 6 p.m. Mark the date on your calendars, and more details will be coming soon.
