Ka nui te mihi mahana ki a koutou,
We hope this newsletter finds you all in good health and high spirits. We would like to express our gratitude to all the parents who took the time to complete our recent community survey. Your feedback has provided us with invaluable insights into your perspectives and priorities, enabling us to identify areas where we can enhance our school's operations and better serve our students and families.
Based on the survey results, we are pleased to report the majority of parents expressed overall satisfaction with the quality of education and the supportive environment we strive to foster at Spotswood College. This positive feedback affirms our commitment to delivering a positive learning experience. However, we also acknowledge that there are areas where we need to improve on in our strategic direction raised by our valued community members.
Key areas highlighted in the survey that require our attention:
Supporting Personal Excellence:
a.To address this we will review our Individual Learning Plans: We understand that every student has unique strengths, interests, and areas for growth and we envision a review of these plans will ensure we have tailored instructions to meet each student's specific need, which will be supported with a review of our communication home through subject teachers and Learning Advisors and our more formal reporting.
b. Mentoring and Guidance: Alongside our Learning Advisory and Koru program we will establish a student led mentoring program where students can connect with older students who can offer guidance and encouragement. This initiative aims to promote personal growth, build self-confidence, and instill a sense of belonging within our school community.
Engaging Students in All Classes:
a. Interactive Teaching Strategies: We recognise that engagement is a critical component of effective learning. Our teachers are actively exploring innovative and interactive teaching strategies to make every class engaging and participatory. This includes incorporating technology, group discussions, hands-on activities, and real-world examples to captivate students' interest and promote active learning.
b. Student-Teacher Collaboration: We strongly believe in the power of collaboration between students and teachers. To enhance engagement, we will encourage open dialogue, invite more student feedback, and provide opportunities for students to contribute to the planning and evaluation of their learning experiences, including negotiated assessments. This collaborative approach will create a supportive classroom environment that values student input and empowers them to take ownership of their education.
We are excited to embark on these initiatives, which will not only address the concerns raised in the survey but also contribute to a more student-centered and engaging learning environment. We will regularly review the progress of these efforts and make adjustments as needed to ensure their effectiveness.
We would like to express our gratitude to all the students who participated in the survey. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping our school's future. We want to assure you that we are here to listen, learn, and act upon your input to continuously improve the educational experience we offer.
If you have any additional suggestions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Together, we can make a significant difference in supporting personal excellence and fostering student engagement.
Thank you for your continued support.
We value your partnership and look forward to our continued growth and success together.
Ngā mihi,
Nicola Ngarewa

BYOD
As Spotswood College continues to grow, we have been evaluating our resources and procedures to ensure that we provide the best educational experience for our students. As part of this we will transitioning more fully to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model, which will necessitate a reduction in the number of daily device loans provided by the school.
Over the past few years, our student enrollment has expanded putting a strain on our device loan program. The current volume of daily device loans is becoming unsustainable as our roll grows. We believe that strengthening our BYOD commitment will not only alleviate the strain on our resources but also enhance the learning environment by allowing students to use familiar devices that suit their individual needs and preferences.
From the start of 2024, we will begin phasing out the daily device loan program. This means that students will be required to bring their own devices to school for academic purposes. We understand that this transition may raise questions or concerns, and we want to assure you that we are committed to supporting our students and families throughout this process.
Here are a few key points to consider regarding BYOD at Spotswood College
Device Compatibility: Students will be able to use any device that meets the minimum requirements outlined by the school. These requirements will be shared with you shortly, along with a recommended list of devices that offer a good balance of functionality and affordability.
Equity and Accessibility: We understand that not all families may have the means to provide a device for their child. Rest assured that we are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to technology for all students. We will work closely with families who require assistance, exploring potential avenues for device support or loan programs on a case-by-case basis.
Network Security and Safety: Our IT department will implement robust network security measures to safeguard student data and protect against potential threats. We will also educate students on responsible digital citizenship, ensuring a safe and secure online environment for all.
Support and Training: We recognise that this transition may be challenging for some students who are accustomed to the previous device loan program. To facilitate a smooth transition, we will provide comprehensive training and support resources, including workshops, and one-on-one assistance, to help students become familiar with their devices and utilise them effectively for educational purposes.
We understand that this change may require some adjustments, and we are committed to working collaboratively with our school community to make this transition as seamless as possible.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we adapt to the changing needs of our growing school community.
"Building Futures: Students Collaborate with Builders on Site for House Construction Project"
The"Build a House" project, is where our students have been actively engaged in constructing a 3-bedroom house on site, at the back of the school. This hands-on experience has provided our students with invaluable opportunities to connect with the industry professionals and gain practical skills that will shape their futures.
Working side by side with skilled builders on site, our students have been actively involved in every aspect of the construction process. From laying foundations to framing walls, this immersive project has allowed them to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. The tangible nature of this experience has brought their learning to life, fostering a deeper understanding of construction techniques and the building industry as a whole.
The benefits of this collaborative endeavor are far-reaching. Firstly, students have had the opportunity to develop vital teamwork and problem-solving skills, as they navigate challenges and work together towards a common goal. The project has nurtured a strong sense of camaraderie and instilled a work ethic that will serve them well in future endeavors.
Additionally, this hands-on experience has provided students with a unique chance to explore potential career paths in the building and construction industry. Through interactions with industry professionals, students have gained insights into different trades, career opportunities, and the skills required for success. This connection with the industry is invaluable, as it helps students make informed decisions about their future pathways and opens doors to potential apprenticeships or further education in the field. Seeing their efforts manifest into a physical house reinforces their ability to create, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society.
As we move forward with the Build a House project, we are excited to witness the continued growth, skill development, and career exploration that our students will experience.

Keeping Yourself And Your Whanau Safe In Our Digital World: Bullying And Harassment
Digital platforms can be useful tools, but in this time and age, there is a significant risk that social media platforms can be used by students to bully each other or spread rumours about others. We are asking for the support of this community to come together in addressing this.
The Spotswood College’s Responsible Use of Technology Policy is below.
As part of the enrollment process, an agreement is signed by both the student and the caregiver regarding the appropriate use of the school's ICT systems. The school offers a monitored internet connection and a safe environment for the students.
Unfortunately, students’ personal cell phones are not covered by the protections that the system offers. These devices can easily be used to cause harm including the form of unconsented recording or photography.
To prevent this, it is important that as a community we understand the Harmful Digital Communication Act and the impact that this form of bullying and harassment can have on the victims. In this digital age rumours and jokes can have lingering consequences.
The Netsafe organization is the best place to get help either by starting a conversation with your child, seeking advice to help create a safer home internet connection or getting support if you are already suffering from online abuse.
Skool Loop
Spotswood College will be using Skool Loop to send out notices and information to our whānau. This is a free app available on Apple and Android devices. You can also access newsletters, contact the school about absences and find helpful links as well as quick access to Kamar.

Attendance
We have a school attendance target of above 90% for every student. To ensure that together we reach this, it is important that if you know your child is going to be absent from school, that you please contact the school by using one of the following options.
Option 1: Telephone the school on 06 751 2416 and speak to the receptionist (Kara) or Attendance Officer (Jenine).
Option 2: Send a text to the Attendance Officer (Jenine) on 021 023 93060
Option 3: send an email to the Attendance Officer (Jenine) - jpr@spotswoodcollege.school.nz
Option 4: Use the school app to log attendance.
Option 5: Leave a message on the Attendance hotline by calling the school on 06 751 2416 and press (1) to report a student's absence. Record your child’s name, parents' name, contact details and reason for absence.
Based on our attendance data system we will send an automated text to parents of any students that are absent, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
If for any reason you are concerned about your child’s attendance, you can speak with the Attendance Officer (see contact details above) or she will pass you on to the DEAN or your child’s Learning Advisor.
