Homer HIGH-Lights
Volume 1, Issue 4, February, 2013
Message from the Principal
The review of our school accreditation is underway as a formal mechanism to ensure the education provided to our students meets acceptable levels of quality. Part of the process is to provide staff, students, and parents the opportunity to evaluate the various components of our overall program.
During the month of February, we will be asking you to complete a survey regarding topics including the quality of our teaching and learning, staff evaluation, improving student achievement, and maintenance of facilities.
Please take the time to complete this survey as we focus on continuous improvement of our program. The survey link is below and will also be available during parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, February 7. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Lockdown Drill
Our safety plans have recently been reviewed by staff in preparation for Homer High School to conduct a lockdown drill in collaboration with local law enforcement and the fire department. The intent of the drill is to simulate an active shooter in our building so we can implement emergency procedures to determine if there are changes that need to be made regarding the safety of students and staff, response time by emergency responders, and communication with parents and local media.
Prior to this drill, an Alert Now message will also be sent out to parents providing notice of the drill. Please log-in to PowerSchool ( https://ps.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/public/ ) and update your contact information if you have made any changes to ensure that you are notified of this drill.
Getting to know...
Kellie Bolin is the new physical science and earth science teacher at Homer High School. Originally from the "thumb area" of Michigan, Kellie grew up playing volleyball, basketball, running, and riding horses. She then attended Hillsdale College in Michigan on a track and field scholarship. While there she majored in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Biology and a 7-12 education endorsement. After graduation Kellie taught and coached in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Dakota.
Kellie and her family moved to Homer in June 2011. What drew them to Homer was the chance to experience Alaska and the wonderful outdoor opportunities. She and her family enjoy taking time to camp, hunt, fish, and play hockey.
Student and Parent Surveys-Win $50
Homer High, along with students across the country, will be taking the biennial Youth Risk Behavior Survey on February 26. In order to participate in this important data collection tool, students under 18 need the permission of their guardian(s). Whether permission is granted or denied, there are some attractive monetary incentives for both families and students to return the form by February 11. Please note that this is different than the 4th R survey that 9th graders have recently brought home. Homer Prevention Project is also requesting input from HHS parents. This short, 6 question survey will help inform their efforts as they move forward in addressing teenage and young adult heavy/binge drinking in Homer. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k1EZvqyr8IahPSdVtBP6ISqD1sBuQ-ritdjZbJR9098/pub
