Promoting Independent Readers
@ The Cube
Independent Reading
The NCTE recently revised its statement on Independent Reading. “Research supports that independent reading has the most significant impact on student success in reading…” (Lewis & Samuels, 2002). To support student independent reading, we have several activities to guide students and help them find books they want to read.

Best Books
Best Books gives students the opportunity to preview the “best” from various years. Books will be spread over 6 different tables. Students will have 5 minutes at each table to explore books. Students fill out a Google form for a minimum of 3 books and will have an opportunity to check out books at the end of class. The results of this form can be shared with teachers.
Genre Personality
To help them find their “genre personality”, students will take a short quiz about things they like and preferences they have. Students will then tally their scores to reveal their genre personalities. Students will get a bookmark explaining their personality and listing book recommendations. Personalities are: The History Buff, The Thrill-Seeker, The Comedian, The Bestie, The Questioner, The Escapist, The Innovator, The Realist and The Activist.
