"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - The music this week is titled the 'Hoe Down' from Aaron Copeland's ballet 'Rodeo'.
This week we turn our attention to the American composer Aaron Copland. He spent his life developing a style of music that could truly be called American Music. The music we are playing is from his ballet Rodeo, and the title is "Hoe Down". The music is fast and exciting and describes the dances that took place in the midwest in the early days of cowboys and cattle ranches, when the whole town would come together to celebrate completing the cattle drive with a big feast that was like the celebration that we will have later this week.
As there are only two school days this week, there will not be a question.
The answer to the question on Dvorak is;
Dvorak was born in the Czech Republic.
4th Grade attend a Cape Cod Symphony concert as part of our "Music Counts Works Everyday" program.

Michelle Fisler - 2nd Grade Classroom Teacher
I grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts and spent every summer in Harwich. I got my undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I worked as an Account Executive for a large printing company in Boston for eleven years. While I was working there I began volunteering at an organization that provided support for sick children. Through this volunteer work, I realized that I was in the wrong career and that I wanted to work with children. I started working towards my Master’s in Early Elementary Education at Wheelock College and earned my degree in 2003. I moved to Harwichport while pursuing my Master’s and commuted to Boston for seven years.
I have been teaching at Harwich Elementary School for thirteen years. I spent two years as a Kindergarten assistant and have taught eleven years in Second grade. I received my Master’s in Reading at Bridgewater State in 2008. I love working with the children and watching them learn and grow.
When I am not in school you can find me spending quality time with my husband Jimmy, my son Will, my dog Ally, and my parents who also live in Harwich. My son plays hockey for the Coyotes’, therefore I spend a lot of time in cold rinks. My family enjoys boating, camping, and golfing. I am currently the Commodore of Allen Harbor Yacht Club in Harwichport. I spend a lot of time there running children’s functions, charity events, social activities, and overseeing the property.
Paula Ferullo - 2nd grade Classroom Teacher
My mother reminds me that my love of teaching began when I was in the 4th grade. Many days after school, I would come home and gather several of my friends in the neighborhood on our back porch and teach them everything I learned that day at elementary school.
I grew up in Holbrook, and when I was a junior in high school, we moved to Dennis. After graduating from Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School, I got married very young and did not attend college until later when I became a single parent. While raising two boys, I attended Cape Cod Community College and graduated with an Associates of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems. I continued my education commuting to U-Mass Boston and graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Management.
While attending U-Mass, I met my husband and we were married in 1990. We each had two boys from our previous marriages, and then we had four! During the beginning years of our marriage, I worked in business, and I was a Director of the Youth Ministry program at our church. While working with the youth, many parents and adult volunteers thought I was a natural teacher, and that it was my “other” profession. With the support of my family, I decided to go back to school. I obtained my certification in Elementary Education from Lesley University in 1998.
I began my teaching journey as a fifth grade teacher at St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School. While teaching there, I obtained my Masters of Education from Lesley University. Five years later, when our nest became empty, I traveled to Nantucket and taught fifth grade at Nantucket Elementary School. After four years, I returned to the Cape, and I was hired as a sixth grade teacher at Chatham/Monomoy Middle School. Last year, I was very fortunate to be able to transfer to HES and return to my love of the elementary school environment.
W.B. Yeats captured the exhilaration of teaching when he wrote: “Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of a fire.” My goal as a teacher is to ignite in my learners a passion for learning ascertaining their inner strengths and abilities and discovering what truly inspires them. Each day, both students and staff members continue to inspire me. I am honored and grateful to be a part of the HES team as I celebrate my 18th year of teaching!
When I am not in school, you will find me spending time with my husband and my best friend of 26 years, our family, and our two pugs. I also enjoy singing, reading, making Nantucket baskets, walking, biking, theater, traveling, and learning to play the piano.
Meg Shaffer - 2nd Grade Classroom Teacher
I was born in Connecticut but spent most of my growing up years in New Jersey. I am the youngest in my family with three older brothers, no sisters :( I am a proud Mom to Ken (17) and Maggie (11).
When I started I college, I couldn’t quite decide what career I wanted. I started as an education major and worked at a group home for disabled adults. I just wasn’t sure I wanted to be a teacher. As a commuter student who worked full time, it took me a few extra years to get my bachelor’s degree. After I got married, my husband and I decided to buy a house “down the shore” (Jersey lingo). We enjoyed living a block from the beach but it was a very quiet place after Labor Day. When my son was born in July 1999, we decided to move to Cape Cod to be near my parents and still enjoy living by the beach. I miss the pizza, bagels and waves of NJ but Cape Cod had become the place we became a family and is now home sweet home.
As my son grew and I began to suspect some learning difficulties, my overall interest in early childhood development grew. I was not used to being around babies at all and not sure what to expect. So, in my thirties, I went back to school and have never left. I found I loved interacting with children and playing a role in their learning. When I look back on my evolution into the teaching field, I’m not sorry about the path that I journeyed. Sure, I might be an ancient teacher before I retire, with everyone asking “isn’t it time for her to …...go yet?” But, each job, life experience and choice I made helped give me a more thorough perspective for this multi-faceted life. I know now that teaching would not have been a career choice I would succeed at or enjoy so much without the life experiences I had first.
In my leisure time you can find me walking the Dennis beaches, riding the open road on our motorcycle, or chauffeuring my kids to their varied activities.
PTO "Movie of the Month"... Friday, November 18th... begins @ 6 PM in the HES activity room.... features "Finding DORY".

Key Club "Gather to Give" Fund Raiser
My name is Grace Boyle and I am a junior at Monomoy. As president of our chapter of Key Club, I am proud to announce that we are hosting an event at the Chatham Recreation Center in honor of National Aid to the Hungry and the Homeless Week: "Gather to Give." This community event will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 12pm-4pm. The family fun-day will be comprised of games, crafts, food, live musical performances, and activities for all ages! We will be collecting donations for the Harwich Food Pantry as admission (3 non-perishables per person or $5) and all other proceeds will be going to Habitat for Humanity, HECH (Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless), and the Monomoy Key Club. We encourage the families of Monomoy to come together in the spirit of giving and supporting one another. I hope to see you there :) Please refer to the flyer for more information. I was hoping you would not mind sending flyers home and announcing this family-fun day event in your school. Our goal is to really get the children and families to come to our event in order ot unite our community and come together to aid the hungry and their homeless in our very own community. It is going to be super fun!!!!
Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
Thank you,
Grace Boyle
