The "Lingo" Standard English is spoken throughout most of the UK with some regional variations in pronunciation and intonation. The following are examples of English regional dialects:
1. London and the South East of England
- "Guv'nor" (or simply "Guv") - Commonly used by Londoners, a contraction of the word "Governor", it is the equivalent of saying "chief", "mac" or "buddy" in colloquial American.
- "All right?" - Greeting
- "Cheers" - Used sometimes instead of "thank you" or "goodbye". Also a salutation when drinking a toast.
- "Ta" - "Thank you"
- "Khazi" - Toilet / restroom
Here’s a list of slang phrases and words to give you inside knowledge of English slang and to give you the upper hand when visiting the city.

- Don’t get shirty with me! – Don’t be disrespectful/ill-mannered towards me
- Not my cuppa tea – Not to my liking

Austin High School, Cesar Chavez Street, Austin, TX, United States
Sibling Showcase
Tommy & Sam Wangemann
1. Name and which instrument(s) do you play?
T: My name is Tommy Wangemann, I’m a senior, and I play the trombone and baritone.
S: Sam Wangemann, 10th Grade, Tuba2. What’s the best part about having a sibling in the band?
T: The best part about having a sibling in the band is that I have someone to back me up when I explain certain things about band to my family. It also means I have someone else in my family that understands the struggle.
S: Always having someone who can help me out with stuff.3. What’s the worst part?
T: The worst part is having to drive them to and from every single band event, more specifically having to look for them after every game/rehearsal/concert so I don’t accidentally leave them at Austin High.
S: Every once in a while when the directors call me Tommy.
4. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
T: The best piece of “band” advice that I’ve ever been given is that even though it sometimes feels like it, it’s not going to last forever, so enjoy it while it lasts.
S: That you can achieve your goals if you put in the time and effort
5. What do you like to do for fun?
T: In my free time, I enjoy listening to/producing music and hanging out with friends.
S: Hang out with friends and play sports
6. If you could have dinner with three people living or dead, who would you choose and why?
T: I would have dinner with Frank Ocean, Kanye West, and Bryan Cranston. Frank Ocean and Kanye West are two of my favorite artists, and Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show (it’s also the greatest TV show of all time).
S: LeBron James, Martin Luther King Jr. and Chris Kyle because I think that they are all influential people who really changed the world through their actions
7. What song is at the top of your play list right now?
T: I listen to a lot of different songs and types of music so my favorites change all the time, but Runaway by Kanye West has been one of my consistently favorite songs for a very long time.
S: “Record Year” by Eric Church, “All We Got” by Chance the Rapper and “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
