FOREST AVENUE SCHOOL NEWS UPDATE
JANUARY HAPPENINGS
WHAT IS GOING ON!
Reading program calendars went out again for the month of January. Please make sure your child/children fills this out and brings it back into their teacher. We have had raffles and prizes for the students that are participating. This week 17 students received gift cards to Island Books store. A big thanks to Island Books for being a school business partner and supporting our Reading Program goals.
Last month 17 brand new basketbalsl went home with the students and the Salve Regina men's and women's basketball team came into school to help pass out the awards. Thanks to Salve Regina Athletic Dept. for their efforts in helping our students read.
This past week our own Middletown librarian, Candise Prewitt came to school to discuss the Reading Program and talk to our students about using the Middletown Library. When your child visits the library five times he/she will be able to come back to school and purchase a book for our library. This is a win/win situation as we gain new books for our library and your child gets to donate and read the new books. Please make sure you and your family support our program.
A notice went home this week describing the BOOKS...THE BRIDGE TO ADVENTURE PROGRAM. Check your child's backpack for the exciting news.

Morning Drop Off
Parents, I need your support on this issue. Please stay out of the bus circle area from 8:15am to 8:45am. The drop off area is on the south side of school. You are creating a dangerous situation as you are parking and dropping off your children in the front of the school. Today I witnessed a child cross from the circle to the front door and almost get hit by another parent. This area is closed off for parent drop off because buses, milk men and other business vehicles are using this area. I also had a work vehicle with a plow today backing up and almost hitting a parked parent car. These maintenance vehicles do not expect to see you there. I realize it is cold and you are trying to get your child close to the front door but this is not the safest or appropriate way to drop your child off to school. Please use the south drop off area and get your child to school by 8:35am.
I cannot explain the depth of how serious this matter is. Just one mistake and one child gets injured and I could not forgive myself for not speaking out and explaining that this situation needs to be remedied. Thank you for your continued support in helping me run a safe and efficient school.
The end of the day dismissal and car rider line occurs in the south lot. Please stay in your car and the staff will walk your child to your car door. If you want your child to be a walker you may park in the either lot but again stay completely out of the bus circle and then pick up your child at the middle or "B" door.
Mr. Ponte
Residency Requirements
Every year it comes to my attention that certain families attend our school and they do not live in Middletown or in our district. Please remember the town and the school department have rules of residency that you must follow. If you live in Newport, Portsmouth or another municipality you must attend the schools in those towns. The rule is defined as: Where does the child sleep during the weekdays that he/she attends school.
If you live out of town or out of the district you cannot attend Middletown Schools unless you have an annual waiver letter from the Superintendent of Schools. In some instances classes have been full at Aquidneck School and those children have been granted permission to attend Forest Avenue School. Please make sure you have enrolled your child in the right district, changed your address at Oliphant Administration Building, reflecting your new residence or make an appointment at Oliphant Administration Building to confirm your residency in Forest Avenue School.
