For the Week of September 9, 2013

Field Trip Highlights

We concluded our Toilet Science unit on molecules and siphons by visiting the Waste Water Treatment Facility. I know most people think 'Yuck!' when they consider visiting this facility. Many of us, including Katie and I, however, found it to be amazing! Our cities plant is unique and is a template for cold weather facilities around the world. We are grateful to Todd Cook and the gang for showing us the plant and its inner workings as well as the small creatures that digest the organic material for the city.

Writing

This week we begin to explore narrative writing. What is narrative writing? What makes it unique? What is the difference between narrative writing and the biographical sketch? We will be taking a common theme, such as 'A Time I Relish' and elaborate upon it. I am excited to see where our descriptions take us!

Reading

This week we will continue our work on the novel Wonder. It was reported in last weeks newsletter that we would be having some 'high achieving' students from the RecRoom come into our class to discuss methods of standing up for others. Unfortunately, the thing about 'high achieving students' coming to our class is that they had classes they could not miss at the same time that we needed them to come to our class! Imagine that! (I'm laughing). We will continue to try to bring interesting and informative guest speakers to our classroom. It just won't be other students for the time being.

Math

We will continue to expand our math program this week. Students have homework that they are expected to complete and turn into their respective teachers before the start of the school day.

Agaya Field Trip

We are quickly approaching the Agaya field trip! One of the things that you can do to help us get ready is to submit recipes to our recipe book! Let us know if you have any questions about how to do this.

Cross Country Running, Soccer, Band, Robotics, Mind-A-Mazes, and More!

West Homer is an exciting place because we have so many extra curricular activities to choose from! We hope that your student is taking advantage of some of these offerings. If you would like any additional information about any of these programs, please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to direct you to the person who can best answer your questions!
