Latinx History Month
Sylvia Mendez was born in 1936 and grew up in an era where Latinx students could only go to non-white schools. Her parents, Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, realizing that the local "white" school had better access to education, tried unsuccessfully to enroll Sylvia in that school.
Gonzalez and Felicitas gained community support and eventually filed a lawsuit against several school districts in Orange County, on behalf of thousands of Latinx families in the area. The case became known as Mendez v. Westminster, with the judge's ruling in favor of the Mendez family. This case was played a vital role in then Govern Earl Warren's actions to desegregate public schools in California and set the precedent for the arguments in the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education case where the justices ruled that segregation of public schools in the US was unconstitutional.
Sylvia Mendez has made it her life's work to be an advocate for civil rights and has traveled the country to speak on her story and the contributions of her parents efforts in the civil rights movement. In 2011, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists
Congratulations to COHS seniors, Nathan Dizon and Vietbao Tran on being named as Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program! Over 1.5 million juniors entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 PSAT/NMSQT. Less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors (16,000) were named semifinalists as a result of being the high scoring entrants in each state.

As time allows, the admissions counselors will welcome all questions including those regarding admission requirements, degrees, financial aid, student life, dorms, etc. You can sign up now for all presentations that are scheduled through September 20th.
There are several area college fairs included on this list. Information about three of them was previously emailed at the end of August.
