Grand Re-Opening
Basra Central Library
Come help return these 30,000 treasures back where they belong!
We will not fall victim to permanent destruction, like our ancestors during the Mongol Invasion. We will continue to grow as individuals and as a society, with a book in our hand and hope in our hearts. We have already seen the result of War in our lives, but we have also seen the power of unity. Books are our past, our present, and our future, and I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. For out of the dust and destruction of war came triumph and hope for a new beginning.
When we read the thoughts of others..We subconciously instill the confidence in ourselves to share our own
The Libraraian of Basra
A book about saving books, now what's better than that?! Small bouts of persistence and optimism produced large amounts of kindness and determination.
This is me! Look for me at the Grand Opening!
I will be the woman carrying more books than I can handle, but don't let my appearance fool you I am tougher than I look!
Alia's Mission
My name may be in the title, but I will always remember the many friends and neighbors that put their time and energy into helping me fight for something that I love.
For those of you who didn't know...
My one true love, the Basra Central Library was taken from our town in the midst of a battle, a battle that lasted 11 days. It was the longest 11 days of my life, and although I feared for mine and my husband's safety I just knew that it was important for me to save as many books as I could. Thankfully my husband was a very considerate and tolerant man, and he did nothing but support my efforts. I wanted my love of books to be spread from generation to generation, and I wanted my grand children's children to know the power of words. Thousands of books were lost during the battle of Basra, but we must not forget about the many lives that were also lost. Men, women and children had their lives cut short that year, but because of books their stories will live on forever.
