Types Of Chemical Reactions

Austin Linton

Definition-The production of chemical compounds by reaction from simpler materials.

Example-Mg + O2 ---> MgO

Definition-Chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down into two or more similar substances.

Equation-AB ---> A + B

Examples-HgO ---> Hg + O2

Single Replacement

Definition-A chemical reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound.

Equation-AX + Y ---> YX + A

Example-Cu + AgNO3 ---> Ag + Cu(NO3)2

Double Replacement

Definition-Chemical reaction in which two compounds exchange positive ions and form two new compounds.

Equation-AB + XY ---> AY + XB

Example- KOH + H2SO4 ---> K2SO4 + H2O

Definition-Chemical reaction in which a substance reacts rapidly, with oxygen often producing heat and light.

Equation-CxHy + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O

Example-CH4 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O
