L.E.S. Artists Are Hard at Work!
Grade 3 artists will be inspired by Van Gogh as they try out his dynamic techniques on a "Starry Night in My Neighborhood" piece.
Our young artists in K and 1 continue to build strong foundations in how colors work together in the color families as they use children's literature (Hot Air Henry) and the paintings of John James Audubon to inspire their artwork this month.
We'd like to congratulate three of our 5th graders for creating work that will be displayed in the FCPS All-County Art Show - (L to R in the photo above) Kalli Chappell, Emma Lowe and Geo Rinker will have artworks at the Delaplaine Center in Frederick for this Youth Art Month honor in March.
Finally, please welcome Miss Amelia Trail to our art program - she is a Masters in Teaching candidate from Mount St. Mary's who is co-teaching with Mr. Hench two-days per week until early May. She's a very talented artist who brings great experiences and ideas to our art classes - we're glad she's with us!

Black-Eyed Susan Books and More! L.E.S. Media News
Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Program
We are continuing to read nominees from the picture book category for the MD Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Program during term three. So far, we have read We Don’t Eat Our Classmates, Are You Scared, Darth Vader? Do Not Lick This Book, The Rabbit Listened, and A Place for Pluto. All grades did some planet research, which was differentiated for each grade level, to tie in with our Pluto book. Ask your child a fact they learned about their planet, and which nominee from this list is their favorite so far!
In addition to the picture book category, there is a chapter book and a graphic novel category for students in grades 4-6. Many of our 4th and 5th graders are participating in these two categories. Students are challenging themselves to read at least eight of the ten chapter book nominees by the end of April. This is our first year participating in the graphic novel category at LES. I am proud of the students who have been independently reading these great books!
Media Homepage Resources
During term three, students will continue to learn about all of the wonderful media center homepage resources that are available for them to use in the media center, in the classroom and at home. We utilize the homepage to read ebooks and access information from the many databases that are provided for students. Visit the media homepage and check out these wonderful resources.
Technology
Students will continue to practice their keyboarding and coding skills during technology time. Students in kindergarten and first grade are learning where all the keys are located when they practice keyboarding activities. Students in second through fifth grade are actually practicing placing their fingers on the “home row” and using the correct fingers to type the different letters on the keyboard. We will also continue to integrate the resources from the media homepage into our technology time.

Get Moving in P.E!
Students in grades 2-5 have been diving into goal setting and challenging themselves with throwing and catching in our Magic Club Unit. It’s exciting to see how how they work to move on to the next challenge level and how much support they give their classmates in the process.
With the same theme in mind K & 1 have been working to master tossing, throwing, and catching at stations and games. Since February is the month of the HEART they used their senses to look, listen, and feel for their heart rate as they became cardiologists for a day and learned about the circulatory system.
The 3rd grade took speed stacking by storm to improve upon their coordination because it will benefit them in so many other aspects of class. Students will have the opportunity to work on striking skills this term and use some of our brand new Washington Capitals hockey equipment!

Music "Notes"
Congratulations to our two fifth grade singers representing Lewistown in the Frederick County Honors Chorus this Spring - Angelo Brooks & Kali Chappell!
Hopefully, you were able to come out and enjoy our LES Winter Night of the Arts back in December. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students had an excellent performance.
The third quarter of our school year will be focused on tone color for our primary students and composition for our intermediate students. Primary students will be practicing different types of instruments and comparing their sounds. Intermediate students will be practicing recorders and focus on writing their own recorder song.
As for upcoming performances, LES primary students have begun practicing songs for their spring concert in May and the chorus has begun rehearsing for their musical entitled "Pirates!" Don’t forget to put these exciting performances on your calendar!
