Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
August 28, 2020

HAPPY FRIDAY, INDEED!
It has been a BUSY and EXCITING week here at the Greatest Little Elementary School in the Universe! As the Steamer students, staff, and students continue to travel through uncharted waters we are finding different ways to improve our systems, communications, and procedures.
One increasing trend that I have noticed this week was full remote learning families inquiring about students being able to return to onsite learning sooner than the end of the first quarter.
If a family whose child(ren) started with full remote learning would like to have their child(ren) return to onsite learning, please contact me via email at jhoese@riverbendschools.net and let me know. We have had a few families do this already.
Have a great weekend :)

I meet individually with students to do brief, solution focused counseling. As I do this, I address topics such as anxiety, friendship, anger management, loss, and family issues. My goal is to help students to develop coping skills to use for their day to day struggles. Feel free to contact me if you feel that your child could use some extra support in any of these areas. I am also willing to set up google meets with those students who are doing full remote learning. My email is tmeumann@riverbendschools.net, phone 815-589-2911.

Mystery Bags in 2nd Grade
The students, teachers, and paras in second grade have been spending the first part of the school year getting to know each other. One of the activities done to familiarize us with our friends was Mystery Bags.
Each person put 3 items of choice in a special “Mystery Bag”. When sharing the items, others tried to guess what the item told us about the person sharing it. We used our great listening and thinking skills. We found this to be a fun way to get to know each other!
First PTO Meeting Scheduled for September 1
PTO will be holding the first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 1st at 6 pm in the FES gymnasium. At this time we will not be providing childcare and ask that only adults be present. We will continue with this format as long as students are attending school in person. We will be publishing the agenda for the meeting in the weekly newsletter the week prior to the monthly meeting. If parents or staff have questions/comments and are unable to attend the meeting you may email us at FultonElemPTO@gmail.com. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks,

COVID-19 Decision Tree for Symptomatic Individuals
Health Examination Information
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges to routine medical care, causing many children to fall behind on scheduled immunizations. In order to protect individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases and to prepare for the return to school, medical providers are urging parents to make appointments to resume necessary immunizations. At this time, all child-health related requirements for school attendance, remain in effect for children in public, private, or parochial schools, as per 105 ILCS 5/27-8.1.
Health-related examinations and immunization requirements are due no later than October 15.
There is no language in the Code that differentiates on-site/physical learning vs. remote/distance learning.
Districts should adhere to the current requirements as per 105 ILCS 5/27-8.1, and all students enrolled in school should show proof of appropriate grade-level requirements. Required physicals must be completed on the Certificate of Child Health Exam Form (completed in its entirety with required signatures). This form is acceptable to meet the requirements for a sports physical, but an IESA/IHSA sports physical form may not be used to fulfill the child health examination. http://www.dph.illinois.gov/sites/default/files/forms/certificate-ofchild-health-examination-03032017.pdf
In preparation for the 20-21 school year, districts should encourage families to seek services from their healthcare provider or to visit the local county health department to ensure compliance with the state of Illinois health requirements for school attendance.
Illinois Department of Public Health Highlights Importance of Getting Tested Amid Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic
SPRINGFIELD – Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recent
announcement on changes regarding COVID-19 testing protocols, the Illinois Department of
Public Health (IDPH) is reminding all Illinois residents of the importance of getting tested,
including after close contact with someone who has tested positive. The Pritzker
administration’s strategy to combat COVID-19 across Illinois has always relied on increased testing. IDPH state labs were the first labs outside of the CDC to test successfully for COVID-
19 early in the state’s pandemic response. Since March, Illinois has tested more than 3.8 million COVID-19 specimens and has expanded testing to areas in the northern, central, and southern
parts of the state.
“In the face of increasing infections, we need to promote more testing, not less, to identify new
cases and interrupt further transmission,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr.
Ngozi Ezike. “Given that asymptomatic individuals have been linked to virus spread, we will
maintain our more stringent guidance to support testing of any Illinois resident who thinks they
may have been exposed, as well as asymptomatic close contacts of confirmed cases 5-7 days post exposure.”
The recent change in federal guidelines on COVID-19 testing does not recommend asymptomatic individuals who come into close contact with a confirmed case be tested for the
deadly virus. Many individuals who test positive for COVID-19 have not reported having
symptoms. However, scientific studies have proven that those individuals are still able to spread
the disease to family, friends, and members of their community who may become sick and
require medical attention and even hospitalization, especially for those with underlying health
conditions. Illinois will continue advising anyone who comes into close contact with a confirmed
case be tested.
There are almost 300 testing sites in Illinois, including 11 state operated community-based
testing sites and 12 mobile testing teams that collect specimens at facilities experiencing
outbreaks (such as nursing homes and correctional centers) and areas around the state reporting increased cases. Additionally, IDPH is deploying its Wellness on Wheels mobile unit to hotspots around the state to work with local health providers to collect specimens. Testing at state operated sites is at no cost to the individual, as are several other sites. More information about locations, times, and requirements can be found at http://www.dph.illinois.gov/testing.
