Exploraciones. Exploraciones is a collection of resources for teaching Spanish in the elementary grades. The collection includes the ¡Arte y más! video series, which is designed to take students with no prior experience in Spanish from the novice-low to novice-mid level as defined by the Kentucky World Language Proficiency Standards. The collection also includes themed units featuring a variety of video segments, animations, lesson plans, activity ideas, and other materials for teaching students at the novice-mid to novice-high level.

Oh Noah!

Oh Noah! Oh Noah!, (formerly known as Noah Comprende) is designed to teach Spanish to children ages six to eight through animated videos with embedded games that help build vocabulary. In each three-minute video, a misunderstanding launches a comic misadventure. Kids learn language better when they can put it into meaningful context. Although – like Noah – they may not understand all the Spanish dialogue, kids can comprehend the story told through rich visual storytelling, much like a silent movie.

Kids in Motion

Kids in Motion. These video segments range in length from five to fifteen minutes demonstrating simple yet meaningful movement activities that are easily replicable in the classroom, after school or home setting. This collection includes over 50 videos and lessons covering a wide variety of curriculum including, Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, The Arts and World Languages. These videos and lessons are geared towards grades Kindergarten through 5th. Video is available in both English and Spanish audio, along with corresponding closed captions.

¡Arte y Más!

¡Arte y Más! Sra. Alicia (teacher Alicia Vinson) and Susana, a friendly iguana, teach Spanish to primary students by immersing them in the language—all instruction is in Spanish—and by engaging them in participatory lessons addressing arts and humanities content. Students acquire the vocabulary and grammar of Spanish while learning about basic concepts in dance, music, drama, and the visual arts. This immersion approach aligns with national standards in teaching foreign languages.

¡Arte y Más! includes 60 10-minute instructional programs, divided into two levels. Level 1 (Programs 101-126) uses introductory-level language and focuses on movement concepts. Level 2 (Programs 127-160) deals with visual arts, music, and drama. All of the programs contain direct instruction in arts content and are designed to actively engage students—and their teachers!

Saludos. Saludos introduces Spanish to the English-speaking student. The emphasis is on oral communication, with each program introducing a limited number of new words and grammatical structures. The objectives are to create a positive attitude toward learning a foreign language, teach correct Spanish pronunciation and a practical set of Spanish phrases, present the history and culture of some Hispanic countries, and develop cross-cultural understanding.

Chinese Folktale: The Little Rabbits

Chinese Folktale: The Little Rabbits. This video features the Chinese story "The Little Rabbits" in both English and Chinese. The story has elements of the Western stories “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Three Little Pigs.” Mama rabbit leaves her three little rabbits at home alone while she goes out. She warns her little rabbits to not open the door for anyone. A wolf overhears the mother’s warning and tries to trick the little rabbits. They aren’t fooled and outsmart the wolf. Storytelling in China goes back more than a thousand years and plays an important role in Chinese society. It has been used as a way to preserve culture and share knowledge as stories are passed from generation to generation.

Lyric Language

Lyric Language. This series combines original music and bilingual lyrics with the fun of live-action video adventure to introduce children to foreign language vocabulary. The song lyrics, printed on the television screen and simultaneously sounded out, alternate between English and the other language to provide instant word comprehension. Beauty of Jasmine

Beauty of Jasmine. The performances in this collection were filmed at the Beauty of Jasmine Chinese Music and Dance Concert at the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts in March of 2012. The program was presented by the Chinese Music, Dance, and Arts Program (CMDAP), led by director Hong Shao. CMDAP is an educational performing and visual arts program that promotes the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.

Noh Theatre. Noh Theater is a form of Japanese drama performed in masks and costumes. Noh performances are traditionally all day and feature a play from each of the five categories; God, Warrior, Woman, Deranged, and Demon. Each category has a specific mask and costume.
