A Message from the Principal
For the past 28 years, we have been blessed by the dedication and commitment of two wonderful teachers who have touched the lives of so many students. It is bittersweet to share with all of you that Mrs. Joan Lorber, one of our kindergarten teachers, and Mrs. Joanne McMurdo, our technology coordinator, will retire at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. While we are sad to see them leave our school, we are happy they have the opportunity to spend more time with their children and grandchildren and enjoy some relaxation!
Mrs. Lorber started in kindergarten at Saint Paschal Baylon School and has remained in that same position her entire career here. Her warmth, creativity, and generous spirit have been hallmarks of her teaching. Mrs. McMurdo began teaching computer classes part-time and soon saw her role change to full-time. She has led the charge in advancing our technology program from Apple IIe computers to having a 1:1 Chromebook program, SMART Boards in every classroom, a robotics team, and a broadcast booth. Please join us at our school Mass on May 22 when we take time to honor them.
We are so grateful to these two educators who both gave of their time and talents in educating and taking care of so many students during their careers. While they will undoubtedly be missed as the years continue, Mrs. Lorber and Mrs. McMurdo will never be forgotten by so many who crossed their paths on a daily basis. We wish them the best in their retirement!
Sincerely,
Diane M. Raguz

A Winning Weekend
X-STREAM Games
The second annual X-STREAM Games were held at Holy Name High School with over 500 students from 26 elementary schools across the diocese participating. SPB participated in nine different events. Some of the events were exhibition only while others were judged. Congratulations to Athan Willis and Alex Willis who teamed up in Arcade Academy and earned a second place ribbon. Also, congratulations to Max Kiefer and Logan Meek who earned a third place in Invention Convention. Not only did they create the product, but they also had to present in front of a team of judges. Thank you to our teachers who worked with our X-STREAM groups over the course of the last few months: Mrs. Kitko, Mrs. Kulick, Mrs. Leffler, Mrs. Longano, Mrs. Lorber, Miss Martinson, Mrs. Meeks, Mrs. McMurdo, Mrs. Mickol, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Popelka, and Mrs. Uzzo.
Science Olympiad
John Carroll University hosted Science Olympiad for ten Catholic elementary schools on Saturday. The SPB team of nearly 50 students participated in 26 events/activities, and they made quite a showing! Our Science Olympians placed 19 times in 13 different events. Congratulations to all of our students who participated in this annual event. Thank you to Mrs. Hanus, Mrs. Curtis, and all of our parent volunteers who prepared our students and judged on the day of the event.
Power of the Pen
Eight SPB students participated in the Power of the Pen Regional Tournament at VASJ High School. With fifty-six schools competing, Samantha Mailer was able to receive a 5th Place Medal. Many of the students received #1 rankings on their pieces of writing as well. We are proud of these powerful penners: eighth graders Macey Israel, Samantha Mailer, Clare Valenza, and Samantha Werbeck, and seventh graders Lily Jarc, Anai McKinney, Colin Mooney, and Corinne Sutton. Thank you to Mrs. Connors for coaching and judging and to Mrs. Klepcyk and Mrs. Krogman for judging.

Playground/Lunchroom Supervision-Primary Grades
The links to sign up for playground/lunchroom supervision for parents/guardians of students in grade 1 and Kindergarten for the remainder of the school year are now live!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. Grade 1 Parents, April is a short month because of Easter Break, and there are still quite a few spots open! Please try to fill up those days! We are so grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the grade level link to pick a time convenient for you: Grade 1 or Kindergarten.
Our sincere thanks to the following Grade 2 parents (and others) who were able to volunteer during the month of March:

THANK YOU! and Happy Easter!
From the Pastor's Perspective...
Lent is rapidly coming along and soon we will be in April. This means it’s time to start thinking about the great celebrations for Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. These “three holy days” are so important to our worship life. We can to be tempted to come up with excuses why we don’t attend Mass, or even these special days of celebration. Lent reminds us, through the Sacred Scripture texts, that even Christ was tempted NOT to worship God – and worship other things! Christ overcame that with putting the excuses aside and focusing on the commandment: worship God alone!
Christianity is a “team effort,” like a sport. We can’t worship without one another, especially Sunday to Sunday. As Saint Paul says, “Can I say to that part of the body, I don’t need you?” No – we need each other and need to support one another to worship together as the Body of Christ. We all have our parts to play – and we are at a point where we would like you to become more involved in the liturgies in the following ministries:
· greeters (Contact Tony Ward: music-liturgy@saintpaschal.com)
· Communion ministers (Contact George Zagar: zagarga@gmail.com)
· lectors (Contact John Schuster: johnschuster9@yahoo.com)
· and altar servers (Contact Kathryn Mailer: solonkat@yahoo.com)
Being involved helps one understand and participate in the Mass, just like being in a sport needs so many to be “part of the team.”
The “Super Bowl” of all liturgies is coming soon, as well as Palm Sunday – starting in the Eymard Room for the blessing of the palms. I invite you to take some special time with you and your family to participate in them. Let me name a few highlights that make these events special to us:
· Holy Thursday, April 18 – 9 a.m. Morning Prayer for all the students and parish, with a silent retreat lunch; that night, join us for a special potluck in the Eymard Room @ 5:30 p.m. – bring your favorite dish to share and sign up at the parish office: (440) 442-3410 or parishoffice@saintpaschal.com; the liturgy begins at 7:30 p.m. with the very moving foot washing ceremony (get a pedicure and plan on having your foot washed!) and the candle light procession; if you want to sneak away for some quiet prayer time between 9:30 p.m. & Midnight, join with us in the Saint Ann Shrine – park in the horseshoe lot of Wilson Mills.
· Good Friday, April 19 – 9 a.m. Morning Prayer; Noon Youth Group Live Stations followed by a soup supper; 3:00 p.m. service with the veneration of the cross or 7:30 p.m. is the repeat for those who work during this holy day.
· Easter Vigil, April 20 – 9 a.m. Morning Prayer; Noon Food Basket Blessing for Easter; 8:30 p.m. the “mother of all vigils,” with the special fire, procession with candles, bringing 12 people into the church, renewal of our baptism and the joys of celebrating Christ’s resurrection.
Like health care professionals, lawyers, athletes, dancers, musicians, who practice in these fields, we are called to “practice our faith” by worshiping together. If not at these events, I hope you’ll “get back on the bike,” and make a commitment to join with us in worshiping together as the Body of Christ on Sundays! WE MISS MANY OF YOU!
We are blessed with great liturgical ministers who sing, share their time and pray well. I look forward to seeing you for this special week and time, but most of all, it’s such a joy and blessing to be your pastor and worship with you Sunday after Sunday!
Thanks for your participation in the life of our parish – Eucharist, the source and summit of our lives, that we have to practice and practice to understand, deepen and grow with so that our faith comes more alive. Let us continue to pray for each other!
In Christ our Eucharist
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS
Pastor
PS – Who have you invited to come with you to worship with at SPB? Please do so and let’s introduce one another! I would really love that!

Serve as a Family: The Ministry of Greeters
We’re creating a new ministry at SPB, and it’s an opportunity for whole families to minister together! Greeters will welcome people at the church entrances, hand out Worship Guides, and be a friendly face when guests need direction and guidance. Also a great way to earn service hours. If you’d like to help get this new ministry off the ground, contact Tony at tony@saintpaschal.com.
