Cedar Grove Friday Flash
May 8, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
As you know, on Wednesday, Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that Maryland public schools will remain closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. We are saddened that we are unable to finish the school year together, but we will continue to work with you and your children to provide online learning to the best of our abilities. There are many questions that we all have, and as we learn more about what is to come in this next phase of distance learning, we will be sure to communicate important information to you in a timely fashion.
If your child needs to obtain or exchange a Chromebook or you are in need of a MiFi device, these items may be picked up at at 45 West Gude Drive, Rockville, MD from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. every weekday. Families should wear masks and bring their child’s student ID number with them.
Reminders and general information:
Watch lessons from Eureka Math, find read aloud stories, and get MCPS News on MCPS-TV, (cable channels Comcast 34, Verizon 36, and RCN 89). The Eureka Math lessons are taught by teachers from Greatminds.org. View the schedule to find out when the programs will air by grade level, module, and lesson.
- The technology help line is 240-740-7022. Please have your name, your child’s name, MCPS ID number, phone number or email address and the issue ready.
- Families can pick up printed math packets for prekindergarten and elementary students at all meal sites between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13 and every other Wednesday at any of the meal distribution sites. Click on Meal Site Information to view these locations.
- For additional math help, go to Knowledge on the Go for video lessons and written materials for Math by grade level!
We would like to wish all the moms in our Cedar Grove family a very Happy Mother's Day. Enjoy your special day and the weekend!

Update on KidsKreations Art Fundraiser!
Hi Cedar Grove Artists,
Thank you for all the students who participated in the KidsKreations art fundraiser this year! I wanted to give an update on the orders that were placed. The school closure has caused an unexpected delay, but the orders will be arriving soon at our school! Students who placed an order will be able to pick up their orders from school starting June 1st. You may stop by the school to pick up the orders on Mondays from 9 AM-12 PM. I will send out another reminder on June 1st, to make sure you remember to pick up your wonderful creations!
For those who wanted to purchase something, but were unable to because of the closure, it's still not too late! You can continue to order online until May 29th, 2020 using your Art ID code and have it delivered directly to your home. To place an order online until May 29: Follow directions located on the back of your personalized brochure. Visit Cedar Grove’s Kids Kreations Webstore. Enter your Art ID Code in the search bar. If you need the Art ID code please email me at Annie_Kang@mcpsmd.org. Thank you once again for your support in the art program and I hope you enjoy the one of a kind keepsake with your beautiful artwork on it!

Grades 4 and 5 Virtual Chorus Video Information
Greetings, 4th/5th grade Chorus students and parents!
We have finalized the information in regards to the optional "Virtual" chorus video performance of our chorus song, "If You're Out There" by John Legend. If you would like to participate in this optional "virtual" performance, you will need to complete the Parent Media Consent Waiver, (Links to an external site.)and then submit your video performance of the song, following the Parent Instructions/Guidelines for video submission found in this .pdf document. (Links to an external site.)
In order for the compilation of individual student videos to be compatible when put together, please follow the video submission guidelines carefully. They are simple, but important for this all to work!
If you choose to participate, please submit both the waiver and the video submission by Wednesday, May 13. It will take a few weeks to compile it all. And we hope (fingers crossed) that it will all work!!
Don't forget to use the practice suggestions found here, Virtual Chorus Practice Suggestions (Links to an external site.), in order to feel confident and sound your best!
Please don't hesitate to contact me at cheryl.m.smoker-arellano@mcpsmd.net with any questions in regards to the waiver/singing/practice suggestions. If you have specific questions about recording (as per the recording instructions), feel free to contact our 5th grade parent volunteer who is assisting in this project, Katya Shterenberg. katya@storymotion.com.
Stay healthy, happy, and keep smiling! Happy practicing and video-taping!

Kindergarten Orientation
From Mrs. Spoales, School Counselor
Hi Families,
I am always excited to find resources that I think will be beneficial to you and your family during this unprecedented time. I found this May calendar that focuses on happiness- you may want to use it day by day or just for ideas of activities you can do together. If you find a resource or have a great family idea/activity, please pass it along to me and I can send it out!
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Our Media Specialist
Hello everyone! I hope this finds you well as we continue our distance learning! Here is the May Media Monthly! Please bookmark and visit this page often. I will be updating it as media activities are posted in The Virtual Media Center in MyMCPS Classroom! Your students should see the tile on their dashboard. These are what I call My-Choice media activities, created for each grade level and are completely optional! In addition, the Virtual Media Center is loaded with online resources -- everything from eBooks and Read-Alouds to Informational databases. And, for our students who are logging into an MCPS Chromebook with their MCPS Google accounts, here is the slide show with the Morning News Blast embedded so they can see the morning news (and our special guest videos!). I miss all of your children so much, and I hope that you are all seizing the moments as we experience this historical event together.
What Are You Reading?
Mrs. Hirschhorn is creating another project -- we want to see you and the books you are reading! And, we are happy to take pictures with your readers holding the book in front of their faces, if it makes you more comfortable! Above all, please make sure we can see the covers of the books in the picture! Email your photos to Mrs. Hirschhorn as soon as possible. Thank you!
Thank you!
From Mr. Jansson, PE Teacher
Hi Everyone,
I hope this finds you well. We will continue with online learning for May and June. Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade will be working on Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance. Students in 3rd through 5th grades will be working on Health Fitness Components. Try your best to participate in the lessons. There have been issues with some students getting locked out of assessments. One way to trouble shoot is to make sure you have done all the components in the lessons. Don't skip right to the quiz. If you are still having issues, do not worry. We are aware of the problem. The main thing I want is for you to participate and try the lessons.
I am sad we will not be having BEAR DAY, but I sent out this week a virtual field day for you and your family. This is totally optional and there is nothing that needs to be turned in to me. If you have time try a few activities and have fun!!!
Take care & be healthy,
Mr. Jansson
