National School Counseling Week Feb 4-8
National School Counseling Week 2019 (#NSCW19) is Feb. 4–8, 2019. The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Take a moment to thank your local school counselor(s). Follow #NSCW19 on social media.

For needs great or small please reach out to Mrs. Burrell @ sburrell@littleelmisd.net. She is here to support your child, your family and our school! She provides connections to resources both in the school and community, meets with students in groups or independently as well as provides campus wide guidance activities. We know social emotional health is important for so many reasons.

Here is a sneak peak into the 6th Grade Advanced Science Lab this week.
The learning target for 6th grade advanced Science students was:
- I can investigate how organisms depend on and compete for abiotic/biotic factors in an ecosystem by analyzing information in lab stations.
Higher order thinking questions:
- What is the difference between an organism and population in an ecosystem?
- What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem?
- How do organisms and populations depend on biotic and abiotic factors in their ecosystem?
Our 6th grade Advanced Science students worked hard to finish presentations representing biotic and abiotic items within a selected ecosystem. They were able to conduct research of their ecosystem to assist in their understanding of the relationship between these and represent these connections visually. Students excitedly explained their findings during my observation and most enjoyed being able to creatively represent these relationships. Proud to see learning that incorporates sensory learning and goes beyond what a book can tell us. Deeper learning sticks.

Staff Spotlight
Greeting Lobos! This week’s staff spotlight is on one of our amazing math teachers, Mrs. Styer. Mrs. Styer currently teachers 8th grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M University and a Master’s in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University.
This is Mrs. Styer’s 11th year teaching and 6th year with LEISD. Mrs. Styer loves teaching math because it allows her the opportunity to apply knowledge to real-world experiences. Mrs. Styer’s goals are to build her student’s confidence with math and have students feel the same passion about math that she does. “I love the excitement that my students have when they solve a problem that they thought they couldn’t solve.”
In her free time, Mrs. Styer loves spending time with her husband Tony and her two beautiful daughters Gabriella (3) and Margaret (1). She is a Disney fanatic and loves to run. She has recently completed her second half marathon and has plans to complete many more in the upcoming year.
