May News
Elkhorn High School
From the Office of the Principal, Mark Schroeder
EHS Families,
I want to start with a huge thank you to all parents who have helped out with either Prom or teacher appreciation this past few months. Prom went off without a hitch! I was especially happy to see our Seniors have the chance to have their first prom in the ‘usual’ setup of the school. I also want to thank the entire Post-Prom Committee as their transition from Prom to Post Prom was seamless and kids had a great time. Also, all of this week NHS is celebrating our staff with meals and the like due to generous donations from EHS families - thank you for your support both now and all year!
Just about three weeks to go, and prom in the books, this is always the time of year I would encourage parents to really reiterate to kids how important it will be to finish the school year strong. This team of kids has navigated this unique year so well, and I always want to work to help students avoid a ‘summer slide’ during the month of May. I know your conversations with your students go a long way in helping counter that phenomenon.
I was extremely proud of the focus shown by our 9th, 10th and 11th graders during ACT and Pre-ACT testing day on April 5th. It was clear that our students took the test very seriously and gave the tests their best efforts. Thank you for reinforcing high expectations for the ACT tests and valuing high school and post-secondary education. Your conversations and expectations matter. I am sure at times as a parent, you may feel like your kids don’t always listen to you… trust me, your messages make a difference! I believe Juniors have already received their ACT results and 9th-10th grade results will be given to students once we have the info!
EHS 9th-11th grade students will be dismissed early on both finals testing days in May. On Monday, May 23rd, students will be dismissed at 12:55 after taking finals in periods 1,2, 3 and 4. On Tuesday, May 24th, students will be dismissed at 11:45 after completing finals in periods 5,6, and 7. Please note that no lunches are served on these final two days of school. You may notice the school year is ending two days earlier than originally indicated on the calendar due to the small number of inclement weather days.
EHS Seniors will take finals during 5th-7th periods on Tues. 5/17 and 1st-4th periods on Weds. 5/18.
In order to ensure test security and that all students are prepared for finals, early finals are not permitted. Please work as best you can to schedule family trips and appointments around these dates to ensure we can have as strong of a finish to the semester as possible.
As this is the last letter of the school year, I would also like to take a minute to thank two staff members retiring from EHS this year who many of you have worked with over the years. Liz Jones will be retiring from teaching English - having spent 10 of the last 11 years of her career at Elkhorn High School. Additionally, Nick Jarzynka is retiring from the business department after spending the last 18 years at EHS. This place will feel different without them, but I wanted our families to know just in case it was news you hadn’t seen!
On behalf of the staff here at EHS, I’d like to thank all of you for sharing your children with us this year. It truly has been a year like no other. Your partnership is invaluable to our success as a school district and we are fortunate to have such a supportive community. Your dedication as parents, our students’ commitment to excellence and our teachers’ passion for teaching and learning has created a wonderful year full of accomplishments and memories. I am proud to have served you and your students this year at EHS and I look forward to many great years ahead. Thank you and please have a safe and relaxing summer. I will be at the school the majority of the summer, save for a few weeks in July. Please feel free to call my office or email if we can be of assistance at the end of the year or over the summer break.
