Whats happening in Carlow?
National Engineering Week
Engineers Week, is an annual campaign designed to inspire the next generation of engineers and excite students about the possibilities a career in engineering can offer. This event was held in March at Carlow Library and we had two groups of volunteers from Unum attend the event, they presented the post primary students (in senior cycle) and talked about pursuing technology.
The main focus was on software engineering as a careers and real life examples of the role of engineers in UNUM. The presentation were informal and a number of topics were discusses including Cloud computing, Mobile technology, Life at Unum, Woman in IT, Careers in IT and the team shared personal testimonials of why they choose IT as a career path. The team thoroughly enjoyed meeting and inspiring the next generation of engineers – hopefully some will be future colleagues at Unum.
The team received some very nice feedback and are looking forward to next year’s event already!
"I just wanted to say a huge thanks to you and your UNUM team for two fantastic workshops during engineer’s week. ALL of the team were so friendly and the treats that they brought for the students were well appreciated!! It was great to meet your transatlantic visitors and I hope they enjoyed meeting some future engineers!!....The feedback from both schools, Carlow VEC (Team 1) and Presentation (Team 2) was brilliant, and they were thrilled to learn more about UNUM and its role in Carlow. 2016 Unum Ireland Food Drive
Following on from the good news from Rick McKenney that PBI pay-outs have been approved for 2016, it was time again to give a little back to the needs within the local community and launch the 2016 Unum Ireland Food Drive.
This year our donations will be distributed to two very worthy causes
- St. Clare's Hospitality/ Food Kitchen - St Clare's Hospitality Kitchen is run predominantly by volunteers and provides hot meals free of charge to those who need it most, providing upwards of 300 meals per week.
- The After Schools Club - This center in Carlow offers a service to disadvantaged children aged 5 to 12 years-old, offering supervised homework, play activities and most importantly hot meals to all children who otherwise, may not get fed at all..
The assistance provided by Unum will be of huge importance to both of these centers to the extent that the food we provide to them will cover most of their needs throughout the year. They get no Government assistance and are entirely reliant on donations of money and food from people like us, and the time of their volunteers.
This year, the ECS Delivery team has volunteered to coordinate the Unum Ireland Carlow effort
