Week of January 4th

Welcome Back!

And just like that, we are back at it in 2016. The students came back refreshed and ready to learn. Some of the things we are currently studying are polygons and angles in Math, atoms and matter in Science, and prepositions in Language Arts. We will continue to push Reading Plus in and out of the classroom. 3rd Quarter AR goals have been set and are on a label on Jan. 11th in their planners. Their goals are much higher this quarter due to reading two novels in class together and using their AR points from those tests towards their goals. Your child should be reading an average of 20 minutes at home every night. Independent reading, or even reading to/with you, is very important this second semester of 5th grade. Ask your child about what they are reading and have them tell you about their book.

Ice Fishing

Parent Volunteers and Mrs. Abi took the 4th and 5th graders Ice Fishing after school on Thursday. What a fun experience for them!

Griffin C. shared about the experience:
We went ice fishing on Schaefer's slough. Before we got there, they caught a crappie. So I had some hope that we would catch some fish. While we were out there they provided us with some snacks while we fish. We didn't catch anything, but we did have a bite. We were in about four foot of water with about a foot of ice.

Cool Temps

Next week is looking to bring cool temperatures. Please make sure your child is prepared to go outside. We will go outside unless there is a wind chill of -10* or lower. Students should have snow pants, a warm winter jacket, boots, hats, and gloves every day. They are allowed to leave inside shoes in the classroom during the week. Thank you!

Student Spotlight

Noah was the lone 5th grader in the Building with Blocks contest that took place over break. He was also the Grand Champion of the 4th and 5th grade division. Noah used Google's Build With Chrome online program to create a visual from the book, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Way to go, Noah!
