From the Principal's Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
After the brief pause of our normal routines we experienced during winter break, we’ve been as busy as ever here at Glen Grove.
Back to School Reminders
We kicked off the first week back with an entertaining, interactive, high-energy assembly to refresh our students’ memories about general behavior expectations across our school. We followed this up with dedicated class-time over a two-week period to engage our students in the powerful and proactive best practice of reviewing the school-wide behavior expectations outlined in our Glen Grove Student Handbook. If you would like to discuss or reinforce these guidelines at home, feel free to access our handbook by using the link provided on the “Students” page of the Glen Grove School website.
Winter MAP Scores Posted in PowerSchool
As noted in our last newsletter, students recently participated in the Northwest Evaluation Association Assessment (NWEA). We now have a series of “data days” planned in which teams come together for a half-day to analyze school-wide and individual student data. We use this information to ensure that we are meeting our students’ academic needs as well as identify focused interventions we can implement for the remainder of the year if we find we are not on target with our goals.
Individual reports for students in grades 3-8 will be emailed to parents on Friday, January 24. If you do not receive an email with your child's report by Monday, please contact me by email (hvena@glenview34.org). Please remember that these assessments are meant to inform us about the progress our students are making in reading and in math and should be a natural and seamless part of the ongoing improvement process.
Referendum Information Sessions
Glenview School District 34 is asking voters to consider a referendum to improve safety and security, repair and replace aging mechanical systems and deteriorating infrastructure, address ADA compliance needs, improve classrooms and science labs, and add instructional space, including space that will allow District 34 to offer full-day kindergarten. The District is hosting a series of information sessions to ensure that community members understand the facility needs, how the referendum will address them and the estimated tax impact -- and have an opportunity to get all questions answered so they can make a fully informed decision when voting. Please note the session locations, dates, and times below this message.
I end the first message of the calendar year with sincere gratitude for your ongoing support and a wish to all of you for a healthy, prosperous, peaceful, and happy new year ahead!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena
From the LRC
Thank you to everyone who donated to the drive, we collected 53 coats!
For Battle of the Book Teams
Students participating in BOB will have the opportunity to stay in for recess in order to practice for their upcoming meet. Mrs. Funke will provide practice questions similar to what the students will be asked at the meet.
Are you interested in volunteering in the library?
We are always looking for people to help shelve books, organize the Celebrating With Books program, decorate the window displays and other special activities. There is no experience necessary to volunteer. We will teach you all you need to know to help in the library. Volunteer once a week or once a month, it’s up to you! We welcome any and all the help that fits your schedule. If you are interested, please contact Lisa Funke, the librarian at lfunke@glenview34.org or call the school at 998-5030.

5Essentials Parent Survey
5Essentials Parent Survey - Give Your Input About Our School!
The 5Essentials survey is given to parents of all students throughout the state of Illinois. Your participation allows us to gain information to make our schools the best they can be our students. The Survey is administered for the Illinois State Board of Education by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago.
Participation in this survey is a factor in the ranking of our school on the Illinois Report Card, so we are hoping that EVERY parent will give their input -- including you!
Outdoor Recess Procedures
Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F.
We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure.
From the Nurse's Office
Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found under the Parents Tab on the district website in the health and wellness file. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc.
Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 657-2394! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
Parent Visits and Our Security System
We welcome any parents who would like to visit our school and we ask that you:
- Please call your child’s teacher to arrange an appointment if you want to visit a classroom.
- All visitors (including parents) will be asked to present valid state issued identication (drivers license or state i.d.) that will be entered into the system before gaining access to the school beyond the main office.

- Please sign out and return the lanyard when leaving the building.
- If you plan to take your child out of the building during school hours, please sign him/her out in the office.
