Our Path Note Topic
WASD has been very understanding and flexible with mask concerns. The district has provided a "grace period" until October 12. On October 12, everyone must be wearing masks unless they have completed and submitted the exemption form to one's school.
On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, it was explained at the board meeting that the district will have to require the wearing of face coverings/masks beginning on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. PA Representative Paul Schemel attended the board meeting. He explained to the board and the audience that WASD has been very lenient compared to most districts in the area. He also explained that there is little more the district can do, but to comply with the Order.
Rep. Schemel also explained that there are two actions taking place to try to overturn the Secretary of Health's Mask Order. One, through legislation. The other is through the courts. A few legislators moved a bill from a committee to the house for a vote. He believes that the legislation will not get past the governor's veto.
The other avenue is the court system. Some legislators filed an injunction to stop the mask order in the court of common pleas. It will likely take some time to go through that process.
In the meantime, school districts must follow the order as best they can. Therefore, on October 12, 2021, WASD will be requiring masks for those who have not submitted the exemption form.

Can you answer this?
Challenge Answer
In PA, school boards have nine seats. The superintendent is the 10th, but has no vote.
School board representation can be as WASD's with three seats in the three areas of the district (North Area, Washington Township, and the Borough of Waynesboro. However, some school districts have single-area representation (9 separate seats) as Chambersburg's school district. Other districts may have "At-large" seating in which the communities vote for nine board members no matter what area of the school district (Greencastle-Antrim SD).
