May miss part or most of the message when trying to take notes and listen to the teacher
May have language delays due to the inability to acquire language through incidental learning
May have difficulty following classroom discussions with multiple speakers

My ROLE- The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing
Alathia does not wear any hearing equipment
Alathia's Hearing:
- Normal hearing in her right ear
- Mild to severe hearing loss in her left ear
Alathia could have problems localizing sounds and understanding speech in a noisy environment.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Ask open-ended questions to check for understanding, not “Did you hear that?”
Perform sporadic listening checks
Gain student’s attention before speaking and face student when speaking
Limit background noise as much as possible
Alathia's Accommodations
- Allow extra time for processing of request/demand (up to 3 minutes is necessary depending on her motivation toward the task)

- Alternate curriculum
- Assistive Technology
- Functional Body positioning
- High contrast materials presented against low complexity background
- Preferential seating to minimize distraction
