Optical cable is a new cable to connect a television to a sound system. It is much higher quality than anything else and is used a lot for surround sound systems.
SCART cable
A SCART lead is used to connect devices to televisions , like sky boxes. it also formats the picture to fit the screen automatically.
USB
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is used to connect devices to normally transfer data, e.g. external hard drives
HDMI
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is used on new tv's to give a high quality HD picture, e.g. it can be used to connect a console to the tv

FireWire is a method of transferring information between digital devices, especially audio and video equipment. FireWire is fast, you can connect up to 63 devices to a FireWire bus. Windows operating systems (98 and later) and Mac OS (8.6 and later) both support it.
SD/Media card
Secure Digital or (SD) is a non-volatile memory card format for use in portable devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, GPS navigation devices, and tablet computers.
Line IN/ Line OUT
Line in/Line out is used for connecting two audio devises together for example you can connect your guitar to your computer in order to record the music you play.
