PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear PK8 Families,
As we approach the end of the second quarter these last couple of weeks are filled with making sure students have completed all their assignments, middle of the year testing, and special holiday activities. It is a very busy time of the year at school, and an important time for students to be in class. Please keep your child in school unless there is an important appointment or your child has a fever over 100.4 degrees. The more regularly a student attends school, the more successful they will be in keeping up with their classwork.
With the change in temperatures we see our students shedding clothes like snakes shed their skins. Our lost and found has been growing the last couple of weeks. Please encourage your students to check lost and found, and feel free to visit the coat rack during our Holiday Program on December 18th.
Thank you for supporting our Paonia Parents Organization at this time of year. The Gingerbread House fundraiser was a big success last weekend! Coming up we have the basket raffle and bake sale at our PK8 Winter Program on December 18th. See you there!
Congratulations to our 6th-8th grade Knowledge Bowl teams! They took 1st place in both the 6th grade and 7th/8th grade categories at the district meet today. That means that PK8 took 1st place in all of the district Knowledge Bowl and Math Counts competitions this fall!!! Way to SOAR Eagles!!

Bake Sale Donations
It is time again for our annual bake sale, taking place after the Holiday Program! Families are asked to bring a baked item for the sale. Just like for the Back-to-School BBQ, we are asking families to donate items by their last name. Here’s the list:
Last name A-D: Pies or cakes
Last name E-H: Quick bread, sweet rolls, etc.
Last name I-M: Fudge, coated popcorn/pretzels, etc.
Last name N-R: Dessert bars, cupcakes, brownies, muffins
Last name S-Z: Cookies, jams, or jellies, salsas
If you have a favorite family holiday recipe, please feel free to bring that instead of the items listed above. Please drop off your items at school on Monday, December 18th before the end of the day.
All proceeds go to the Paonia Parents’ Organization (PPO)! The PPO supports the purchasing of playground equipment, student rewards (such as eagle gear, plaques, etc.), student field trips, and teacher supplies and appreciation gifts!

Giving Trees for Paonia Care Center
Please join us in our annual community service project of the Giving Trees for the residents of the Paonia Care Center. We have been hosting this event since 2016. We will have a decorated tree near the PK8 school office with gift tags for you to take. You may then purchase the gift indicated on the tag and return it to the decorated box in the commons. Please do not wrap the gifts. We will be collecting gifts until December 14th. There will be other Giving Trees at the two banks in Paonia and Hotchkiss. The North Fork High School will also be participating. The Care center will be having its party on December 21st. Thank you for your support with this amazing event!
Help Wanted: Substitute Custodian in January
We are looking for a substitute custodian in the month of January. Please contact the school office for more information.
Grief Group for Students
Has your child's life been touched by the death of a loved one?
Some common reactions to loss are:
• A decline in school performance.
• Changes in sleeping and eating patterns.
• Feeling that nobody understands.
• Changes in behavior. Your child may react to situations in an unusual manner, such as being angry more frequently and with little apparent reason.
If your child is in grades 6-8, we invite them to attend a grief group now being formed and co- facilitated by Hopewest Kids and Ms. Lukez (school counselor). The group will meet weekly for six to eight weeks for 40 minute sessions.
Each session will include grief education and small group discussion. Activities such as writing, art, and literature will assist participants in coping with issues of grief and loss.
A signed parent/guardian consent form is required. For more information, please contact Ms. Lukez at 970-527-4882 or Claire Dauwe from HopeWest Kids at 970-874-6823.
