Great Things Going On In Third Grade
The Bennett Variety show is here! Students will perform Monday morning for the school at 8:30 and 9:30am. The family show will take place Monday evening at 6:30pm. We are so excited to see all of the wonderful acts that the students have prepared!
Please do not forget to join us for our Valentine's Day parties this Friday, February 12th from 1:45 to 2:30. If you plan to take your child home right after the party, please do not forget to sign the check out sheet.
We are so proud of all the third graders who have been 'Reading to Succeed'! Students should continue to read, and fill out their 'Six Flags Read to Succeed Log' to earn a free Six Flags ticket. This is the last month for students to complete their reading. Please see more details below.
With winter in full swing, please see the districts bad weather communication policy attached below.
We have an exciting week ahead in Math, as we begin our study of geometry! Students will learn about 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes and polyhedrons. Students will work through identifying and classifying shapes according to their attributes. Students will learn to identify and count vertices, edges, faces, and angles. This week we will focus on learning basic geometrical vocabulary and working with quadrilaterals. Geometry can be fun, but it can also be challenging because of all of the new terms and concepts that students learn. We are attaching a geometry powerpoint that includes all terms and concepts that the students will be studying. It is a great reference guide to help your student be successful in our upcoming unit.
In Reading, students will focus on identifying authors purpose. Students will learn that an author writes to persuade, entertain or inform. Students will also work on identifying fact and opinion. They will learn to distiguish between fact and opinion in their text.
In Science, students will complete their Light and Sound ELM. They will work within their ELM groups to create a Google Doc presentation.

Six Flags Read to Succeed
We are so excited to participate in the Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club!
This exciting program encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline noted below is eligible for a free admission ticket valid at one participating Six Flags Theme Park. Students will develop a greater appreciation for books when they see that you think reading is important too. You are sure to have fun as you investigate the world of reading together!
Here’s what you need to know:
-Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate.
-Review the attached reading log. Your child should use this sheet to record what and
how long he/she reads.
-Your child must complete 6 hours, or 360 minutes, of recreational reading.
-Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of
reading has been completed.
-Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books (digital or hard
copy). Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count.
-Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult—you can read to your child, or your
child can read to you.
-Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her teacher by the date on the log.
-Your child’s school will submit your child’s information and minutes read.
-Late entries will NOT be accepted.
Each child that completes the Read to Succeed Program will receive a ticket to Six Flags. All Read to Succeed forms are due to your child's teacher by February 29th, 2016. Please see attached parent letter and reading log for more information.
