Oak Ridge High School's Weekly Update
From the Principal
I hope you have enjoyed this long weekend so far. Remember, no school on Monday, 9/6.
We are having a great start to the year - with few issues outside of the health of staff and students. While last week was better than the previous week in terms of numbers of students and staff infected, we are still seeing spread in our community and therefore our school.
Currently, we 95 students isolated with either symptoms or a positive test result, and 2 staff members isolated or with a positive test result. This represents about 3.5% of students, grade 9-12, and less than 1% of staff members. We have seen an increase in mask wearing which I believe is helpful in slowing the spread of the virus.
One of the issues we have been working on fixing is excused absences. We are having our nurse's office and attendance office work on coding absences correctly. If your student is out for illness we will code them as excused absences. If you see an issue with your child's absence coding - please email firstname.lastname@example.org so that they can review your concern.
Late work and missing assignments for absences will follow our school and district policies. Our district policy for late work due to an absence is that students will receive one day for each day of school missed to make up missing work.
Our school policy for late work is that work turned in after the due date, or outside of the extended date for those with excused absences, will receive points off of the assignment.
Teachers are instructed to put a "Z" in for missing work that can be made up; an "X" for assignments that they are not making the student turn in; and a numerical grade for all other scored assignments.
Eligibility for UIL events closes on 9/17. All students must have above a 70 in order to participate in UIL events after 9/24 @ 3:00pm. Waivers are available for students in advanced courses.
For students who are out with COVID during an eligibility check, the we will work to make sure eligibility is not negatively affected if it is out of the student's control.
Have a great week and as always,
Go War Eagles!
Assignments missed because of an excused absence will receive the amount of days missed in addition to the policy described above. If an assignment is turned in within the number of days missed, there will not be a late work penalty.
