February 17th: Spelling Bee
Here are the details: Spelling Bee is Feb. 17 from 2:00 - 3:15 in the cafeteria. We ran long last time so I would love for fourth and fifth grade to bring their backpacks so we can go all the way to 3:15 if we need to. All of fourth and fifth grade come to watch. There will be four champions and one alternate from each fourth and fifth grade class. Competing champions need to meet me on the stage at 1:45. Last year third grade all came to get them exciting for participating the following year.
Looking forward to an amazing C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-I-O-N!

The Word on DRA and ELL:
Can we focus on verbal answers for ELL friends versus written....the answer is YES!!!
Words from Becky Stanley:
I always ask teachers to think about their purpose for the assessment. The “levels” are designed to help you identify where to start teaching. The written summary is just another way to assess the summary skills and writing ability for the “average” student at that level. If you want to know that the students can read & orally respond to the comprehension questions to then start your reading instruction, that is perfectly fine. ELL and special ed students have flexibility in their programming and sometimes need the same in their assessment. Use the assessment for what you need it for and be satisfied it is meeting your instructional needs.
Questions? Please don't hesitate to ask Me (Kristi Shinn) or Cindy Hutchinson
