Smashing Pumpkins & Leukemia
On Oct. 31st, GHS students participated in a Pumpkin Smashing fundraiser to raise money for one of our own Comets, Carson Culter. Carson was recently diagnosed with leukemia. As the color orange is the official leukemia awareness color and with Halloween right around the corner, it only felt right we should smash some pumpkins for Carson’s sake. Students were able to smash, chuck, or catapult a pumpkin for $1. Funds were also raised via costume contests and a pumpkin themed bake good sale. GHS successfully raised over $1,000, but we all know the real healing power came from all the fun, laughter, and positivity! Thank you to everyone who helped plan, who donated food, money, time, or pumpkins, and to those who participated. It was a true example of how no Comet fights alone. #CarsonStrong

Seniors & NHS Students Looking for Community Service Hours
Any student who would like to earn service hours doing computer repairs can do so before or after school hours. For students who may not need hours, but have an interest in technology they would be able to do the same type of work during school hours, schedule permitting. This may be particularly helpful for those students considering a career in the technology industry.
If there are students interested please email Mr. Baker @: tdbaker@genoaschools.com

Quiz Bowl Update
The quiz bowl team went off the wall bonkers last Tuesday night. They went 3-1 in league play, setting a new record for their season. They won against Fostoria, Woodmore and Otsego, but ultimately lost against Findlay. Along with having a phenomenal night in terms of winnings, the team also scored big. Matthew Robinson earned 53 points, his second highest night in quiz bowl history, just one week after he set his new personal record. Emma Lau finished the night with 5 points, Zack Buhrow finished with 4, Emma Gould with 3, Alayna Nowalk with 2 and Tyler Keaton with 2. Fischer Bertok scored 0 points but provided unmatchable commentary, throughout the matches. With one match of regular play left in the season, the team sits 5th overall. It is uncertain whether or not they will be able to cinch up the gap and launch themselves into 4th. They face tough opponents who are a force to be reckoned with, but according to a comment by Captain Matthew Robinson, “Never tell me the odds kid.”

Career Showcase
What Do Employers Really Look For?
Ms. Pam Mohler at the Associated General Contractors of NW Ohio is a partner for Genoa's Career Readiness Program. Ms. Mohler was asked what skills are lacking in today's workforce. Ms. Mohler said:
"Believe it or not, the thing that most applicants lack are math and problem-solving skills coupled with soft-skill training. Our craftsmen use math and science on the job site every day and need to quickly be able to asses a situation before it becomes a problem. Measuring accurately, down to the 10th can be a problem, as can be mastery of fractions. Additionally, anyone on a job site needs to be able to write in clear, concise sentences. If they witness an accident, they will be asked to write a report. That report is admissible in court, so we do need people to write in a clear, descriptive and yet short manner.
I want to stress we also need people who can show up for work EARLY for FIVE DAYS IN A ROW. Most who are let go have had a problem with attendance and tardiness. We actually know when a new version of Halo or Call of Duty has been launched because tardiness and absenteeism peeks – followed by layoffs.
Additionally, it is critical that students interested in a career in commercial construction or engineering, project management and architecture have a driver’s license. They need to be able to drive to work. They need to be able to move themselves from one job site to another during course of the same business day. They may need to train on job site equipment, like a forklift or scissors-lift and you need to know how to drive before you can operate these types of machinery.
Attitude can often play just as important a role as aptitude. I often have contractors tell me they would rather have a young person who is nice to work with, attends every day and is willing to listen and learn than a young apprentice who has great skills but poor attitude."
Wow! Pretty powerful stuff that's applicable to a variety of careers and employment. Ms. Mohler will be at Genoa High School during lunch on November 6th, to talk about careers in the trades and how apprenticeships could be right for you.

Comets Compete On National Level
t was a special weekend for several of our HS wrestlers as they ventured to Greensboro, North Carolina, October 26-28 for the toughest high school folk-style wrestling tournament in country, Super 32. All were warriors as they showed grit and determination and came away with an impressive showing. Most nationally ranked wrestlers participated as you can only compete in the tournament via credentials or qualifier tournament.
Oscar Sanchez competed at 120 and went 5-2 and included a gritty OT win. Oscar's only losses were to two nationally ranked wrestlers.
Dylan D'Emilio competed at 132 and went 7-0 winning in the finals against the #4 wrestler in the country and last year's runner-up at the same weight.
Julian Sanchez competed at 138 and went 3-2. Julian battled against the eventual champ and #2 wrestler in the country.
Dusty Morgillo competed at 145 and went 4-2. One of his wins included an inspirational OT win.
Kevin Contos competed at 152 and went 3-2. He went to war against the eventual weight class champ and #3 ranked wrestler in the country and Virginia Tech commit.
Noah Koch battled at heavyweight and lost two close matches, 5-4 and 3-0.
The Comets will again look to duplicate what they started last year and that is to defend their state championship. Their season officially begins next Friday, November 9th.

Playoff Action Begins Saturday
The Genoa Comet Football team capped off a perfect 10-0 season beating the Fostoria Redman in Fostoria last Saturday night 34-8. As the evening came to an end and the playoff picture began to form, Liberty Center who held the number 1 spot in the regional computer poll lost to Patrick Henry 34-19. This propelled Genoa to the top spot and eventually led to the rematch between league rival Lake Flyers and Genoa Comets.

From the Desk of Mr. Ohlemacher
Dear Comet Nation,
I write to you this week amazed again at how incredible the staff and students of GHS are. On Wednesday of this week we “Smashed Out Leukemia” for one of our Comets, Carson Cutler. We raised more money and showed more love and support than I thought was possible. I should have known better… Are the staff and students at GHS amazing when we have special events? YES! What’s more important though is THEY’RE AMAZING EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!
On Monday the words below were left for Mrs. Szepiela by her substitute teacher:
Dear Holly,
Every student was well behaved. I can really feel that every student appreciated each other, and are like family. It is awesome to see many great things happen here, and continue to put positivity out into the world. Thank you for allowing me to sub for you. If you have any questions, my number is xxx.xxx.xxxx or my email is xxxxxx@xxxx.xxx.
Thanks again!
