Monday Mission Memo

Interim Superintendent's Update
School Leaders of the Diocese of Cleveland,
For many of us, this week marks “take 2” on some Catholic Schools Week events. It is also the first full week of February, which we celebrate as Black History Month. Whether it be ELA lessons about the Harlem Renaissance (and Cleveland’s own Langston Hughes), social studies exploration of historic resources of the National Black Catholic Congress (https://www.nbccongress.org/), or, in age appropriate ways, exploring last November’s USCCB statement on racism in light of current events, we can all find ways to take the opportunity to bring this annual national celebration to life in our schools. Personally, I found the recent challenge to “unpack” MLK, laid out in a recent America Magazine article, an enlightening perspective as both an educator and parent.
Read on below for reminders, requests, and outstanding resources, including the opportunity for an excellent STEM fellowship, as well as a profile of one school and a national NCEA award at another.
Have a wonderful week!
Frank

Apply for the Trustey Family STEM Teaching Fellows
The Trustey Family STEM Teaching Fellows is a fully-funded program with an annual stipend that seeks to foster continuous improvement in STEM teaching and learning. Sponsored by the Notre Dame Center for STEM Education, the program includes three summer institutes on campus at Notre Dame, two academic years of instructional coaching, and the facilitation of a school wide STEM impact plan.
Teachers of the STEM disciplines in grades 5-8 are eligible to apply for the 2019 Cohort. Prospective Fellows must apply as school-based teams of no fewer than three and no more than five teachers. Applications are open until February 28, 2019.
We encourage you to check out some of the great things that our Fellows are doing to promote STEM Education within their schools at our website. Our brochure also provides an overview of our program and can be shared with teachers who you think would make strong candidates.
Please feel free to contact Nikki Gerardo if you have any questions about the program. We look forward to reading applications from teachers at your school!
