Dear BCS Community,
I hope that you are all as excited for the upcoming vacation as we all are. Your children have been amazing this school year. There has been so much great learning going on and tons of fun too. The BCS Staff are working harder than ever to make a calm, positive school environment where we can focus on learning. I am very thankful for this entire school community.
A year ago, I read a tip that instead of a resolution that would get dropped by February 1, I should make a list of 21 things for 2021 that I want to accomplish or be part of. On my list, most were personal items (with pretty good results), and three items were about school. I am happy to report that all three are either accomplished or well underway:
- Hold whole school meetings - we are gathering for Bear Cave every Friday!
- Reading Growth for All - huge progress on some interim assessments with the next benchmark test in January.
- Math Growth for All - as with reading, we expect big gains on the January assessments.
Over the vacation, I will rest plenty, see some family, and take time to think about my list for the coming year. I hope that you all have a great vacation, too.

Test To Stay
Dear Families,
This letter, linked here, went home on November 10 via backpack and describes a new, voluntary way to keep more kids in the building instead of quarantining: Test To Stay.
You can use this link specific to BCS: http://simplereport.gov/register/RBG99 or print the form here.

Second Step for January
Month 4: Emotion Management
This month, our schoolwide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
- Stop—Use your signal
- Name your feeling
- Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You’ll be receiving Home Links that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the Home Links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.
