Third graders at Franklin used their knowledge of forces and motion to try their hand at "snow" removal. They were challenged with the idea of starting their own business and planning the most efficient way to clear a parking lot of snow.
Check out the real-world coding challenge and problem-based learning in action!
DOR’s VIP Table
This month our Little Toreadors are working hard on being Self-Control Sharks! We recognized some friends who have been doing a swimmingly great job! They got to eat lunch at our special DORs VIP table. We can’t wait to have more friends get their turn at the VIP table this month
College & Career Day
Thank you to our community partners who helped make our College and Career day a success!
Meet EDGE student Laney Miller
She is interested in pursuing different routes in the medical field and has been interning with the Boone Fire Department and where she has been riding along and learning the day in and outs of a career in that field. Some of the things she's been able to experience include going up in the ladder truck, trying on the heavy equipment used to fight fires, and getting tours of all of the trucks. She has also done a job shadow with Kari Houser as an ultrasound at the Gabrielson Clinic.
Laney will also start an internship with MercyOne in the ER next month and is planning on going to DMACC to pursue her future career in paramedic fire science.
Alongside all her internship/job shadow opportunities Laney has been collaborating with another EDGE student to raise money for a project called Student of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Last week, she held a fundraiser involving the entire community and spoke to a gym full Boone citizens. She is continuing to raise funds for this project for the next six weeks with more events and awareness. If you'd like to contribute to their cause, here's the website to contribute!

Laney has a bright future not only in the medical/fire areas. She has such a gift for bringing a smiling face to any situation, she is an amazing collaborator, and is willing to take risks. She has grown so much in her communication skills throughout the year and we are so proud of her being a Boone EDGE student.
Huge thanks to Kari Houser (Gabrielson Clinic), Justin Adams (Boone Fire Department), Kylie Streigle (MercyOne), and Analee Gray (LLS)! We couldn't do these experiences without our wonderful partners, we appreciate you.
Did you know?
Did you know there is a major pilot shortage? Iowa Lakes has a new aviation and airport management program! Check it out or share with anybody interested!

The Hooper Scoopers are back for the 2021-2022 DMACC Men's Basketball Season!
Your defending National Champion DMACC Bears would like to invite all 2nd - 8th grade students to sign up for the chance to be a Ball Boy/Girl for the Men's Basketball Team. There will be an opportunity for 4 students to participate at each home game. Each participant will receive a t-shirt to wear during the game that they will get to keep. They will also receive free entry into the game along with 4 passes for family/friends to get into that same game. Please arrive at each game 20 minutes (times on sign up reflect this adjustment) before tip off to receive t-shirt and instructions. We will meet in the upstairs weight-room, above the gymnasium. Finally, a parent/guardian must be present with each participant.
Pease sign up early as we anticipate this being a popular opportunity, and space is limited! Limit two games per student per season. When signing up, please be sure to include the school, grade, and shirt size (Youth Medium - Adult Large) of the participant. Go Bears!!!
Take a look! Here are some pictures of what the new Boone Early Childhood Center will look like
YSS Mentoring Program - Update and Volunteer Opportunity!
The YSS Mentoring Program is looking forward to a return to in-person mentoring for the 2021-2022 school year! The program matches students in grades K-8th with a trained volunteer mentor once per week during the school day. These weekly meetings provide a positive, caring role model to eat lunch with, play games and simply talk about the student's interests and ideas.
Information and volunteer applications can be found at https://www.yss.org/program/mentoring.To learn how your child can become a participant, contact Tracy at boonementoring@yss.org or Heidi at hchopskie@yss.org.
Free School Breakfast and Lunch for all Students for the 2021-2022 school year
Tasty Toreador Meals - Supply Chain Issues
• This school year, thanks to federal pandemic waivers, all students will be eligible for free meals, regardless of family income.
• School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic.
• Our school nutrition team is committed to ensuring students continue to have access to healthy meals each school day.
• Just as families have to make substitutions on grocery lists, schools will have to make some last-minute changes to our regular menus, based on availability.
• We hope parents and students will be patient as we sort through these supply chain issues.
• We may not have the same menu choices that we typically offer our students, but we’ll be sure that all students are nourished and ready to learn.
*Reminder: For students bringing a sack lunch and wanting school milk, there will be a .50 cent charge per carton.

Athletics Registration
Toreador Families,
Our "Online Athletics Registration" is live and active for the 2021-22 School Year (link is below). Please take the time to read through the information, and fill out the forms for your student. All students involved in District-Sponsored Athletics in grades 7-12 will need a completed online athletics registration on file, along with a current physical form (physicals are valid for 13 months after the date of the physical). There is a place within the registration to upload the completed physical form.
Completion of the Registration/Physical is not required for the attendance at any summer camps that may be offered. However, the Athletics Registration and Physical Form must be completed and on file before a student may physically participate in practice this Fall. For High School, this starting date is Monday August 9th. Middle School practices will begin a couple weeks later near the first day of school.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns in this process.
