Working Conditions
Why it was bad
It wasn't good for the following...
- Low pay for country workers, and only seasonal work.
- City workers had terrible conditions, slums, dangerous machines, etc.
- Workers overworked by 12 to 16 hrs
- City workers had lots of pollution in the air, and in the streets
- Sewer systems weren't around yet, making disease easy to contract
Country workers
Often had long days and seasonal work with little pay, but had a nice place to sleep and food. However, they often felt alone and had little friends
City workers
Long days, got payed more, but had terrible living and working conditions with little food. However, they had thriving lives and community.
Child labor
Children were seen as cheap labor, making little or no money. They had dangerous jobs that often left then mutilated and deformed.
Improvements/causes
- Made wages higher
- Had an age limit for workers and hours
- Workers had reforms (strikes)
- Conditions improved after time
- Owners were reasonable
