Health Reminders: When Do I Keep My Child Home? Medication?
Corona Virus Information from Alameda County Health
Symptoms include high fever or cough and shortness of breath. Having these symptoms and either having traveled to Wuhan in the last 14 days or come into contact with someone who may have 2019-nCoV would make a person more likely to need immediate medical evaluation.
WHAT CAN I SAY TO PARENTS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY?
- Follow the CDC’s guidance for travelers.
- Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
- If you traveled to Wuhan and feel sick with fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.
- Travelers arriving from Wuhan are being screened at SFO, LAX, and JFK in the United States, and ATL and Chicago will start as early as January 25, 2020.
February is Black History Month
During February, we will be recognizing Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. We will highlight influential African Americans this month who broke barriers and paved the way by making significant contributions to our country.
In honor of Black History Month, click here for some wonderful books to read with your children!
Influential African Americans
This week we are recognizing African-Americans that broke barriers in their fields.
If you have ideas or recommendations, please reach out to your child's teacher or Principal MacLean.
Alice Coachman Davis 1923 – 2014
Alice Coachman Davis was the first black woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Born in Albany, Georgia, Alice was the fifth of Fred and Evelyn Coachman's ten children. Coachman was unable to access athletic training facilities or participate in organized sports because of the color of her skin.
Added to the list of training barriers was her status as a female athlete during a time of widespread opposition to women in sports. She trained using what was available to her, running shoeless along the dirt roads near her home and using homemade equipment to practice her jumping.
Alice was offered a scholarship by Tuskegee University Athletics where she went on to graduate with a degree in dressmaking in 1946.
The following year she continued her studies at Albany State University, receiving a B.S. in Home Economics with a minor in science in 1949. She became a teacher and track-and-field instructor.
Coachman's first opportunity to compete on a global stage was during the 1948 Olympic Games in London. She qualified for TeamUSA with a high jump of 5 feet 4 inches breaking the previous 16-year-old record by ¾ of an inch.
In the high jump finals of the 1948 Summer Olympics, Coachman leaped 1.68 m (5 ft 6⅛ in) on her first try. Her nearest rival, Great Britain's Dorothy Tyler, matched Coachman's jump, but only on her second try.
Alice was the only American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics in 1948. Her medal was presented by King George VI.
Upon her return to the United States after the Olympics, Coachman had become a celebrity. Soon after meeting President Harry Truman and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, she was honored with parades from Atlanta to Albany and was thrown a party by Count Basie.
In 1952 she became the first African-American woman to endorse an international product when she was signed as a spokesperson by the World of Coca-Cola who featured her prominently on billboards alongside 1936 Olympic winner Jesse Owens. In her hometown, Alice Avenue, and Alice Coachman Elementary School were named in her honor.

James Wormley Jones 1884-1958
James Wormley Jones was born in Fort Monroe, Virginia, was a policeman for Washington Metropolitan Police Dept., a World War I veteran, and most importantly, he was the first African-American special agent for the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In World War I, Jones was commissioned a captain and assigned to Company F in the 368th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Division. In 1918, Jones and Company F was sent to France where his unit saw action in the Vosges Mountains Argonne Sector and the Metz Frantz Campaigns. He also became an instructor of the 92nd Division School of Specialists where he was promoted to senior instructor.
On November 19, 1919, Jones was appointed as the first African American special agent where he was assigned undercover work.
Adah Belle Thoms 1870-1943
Adah Belle Thoms was was an African American nurse, educator, administrator and activist.
Born in 1870, Adah Belle Samuels in Richmond, Virginia, she was the daughter of Harry and Melvina Samuels. As a young woman, she married briefly and kept the surname Thoms. She taught in Virginia, and then in the 1890s, she went to New York, to study elocution and speech at Cooper Union. She then studied nursing at the Women's Infirmary and School of Therapeutic Massage, graduating in 1900 as the only Black woman in a class of thirty. Thoms continued her education at the Lincoln Hospital and Home School of Nursing, a school for Black women, graduating in 1905. Although she served as acting director between 1906 and 1923, racist policies prevented her receiving the official title of director.
She became involved in international efforts to advance the nursing profession, attending the International Council of Nurses in 1912. Thoms served as president of the NACGN from 1916–1923, and played a critical role in lobbying for the rights of African American women to serve in the United States military during World War I. During World War I, Thoms campaigned the American Red Cross to permit Black nurses to enroll. Introduced to President Warren G. Harding and First Lady Florence Kling Harding, she presented them with a basket of roses and told them that 2000 Black nurses were ready to serve their country. These efforts ultimately led to the creation of the United States Army Nurse Corps. In 1923, she remarried Henry Smith, who died within the year.
Adah Belle Samuels Thoms died in New York City, February 21, 1943. She was among the first nurses inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame when it was established in 1976.

Public Charge Rule
On August 14, 2019, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security amended federal regulations known as the public charge rule. The changes to the existing rule, effective October 15, 2019, will make it more difficult to apply for permanent residency or earn a visa if an applicant is dependent on government aid such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, housing assistance, and Medicaid.
It is important to know that the Child Nutrition Programs are not public benefits. Please continue to complete meal applications and alternative meal forms.
Second Step
As part of our PBIS supports, Castro Valley elementary schools use the Second Step program to address:
- Social-Emotional Learning
- Bully Prevention
Child Protection
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children.
You are encouraged to access the Second Step document below for more information on the ongoing lessons and to support your child's learning at home!

Potential Parcel Tax Measure
Click Here to Access the CVUSD Local Funding Page for More Information
High-Quality Education
Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) provides an excellent education that prepares students to graduate ready for competitive colleges and 21st-century careers. This is possible thanks to strong academic programs, excellent teachers, high-performing students and a supportive community.
Planning for the Future
As we look to the future, we know we cannot rely on the state to provide the level of funding our schools need. Our District is among the lowest funded in Alameda County and has already made $1.8 million in ongoing cuts in the past two years. Additionally, the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and many of our teachers live right here in Castro Valley. By retaining and attracting the highest quality teachers, we can improve student achievement and continue providing an excellent education to students.
Potential Local Funding Measure
To provide dedicated funding for our schools to support programs and teachers, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Education is considering placing a local parcel tax measure on an upcoming ballot. Although no final decisions have been made, a measure may cost $96 per parcel per year and generate $1.5 million annually for six years.
Funds from a measure could:
- Retain and attract highly qualified teachers
- Preserve strong academic programs in reading, writing, science, technology, engineering, arts and math
- Prepare students for college and careers
- Support the health and well-being of all students
- Keep schools clean and well-maintained
Fiscal Accountability Provisions of Potential Local Measure
- All revenue from the measure would be spent right here in our District to support local schools and could not be taken away by the State
- A citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits would ensure that all funds are spent as promised
- No funds could go to administrator salaries
- Seniors would be eligible for an exemption from the cost
