Look What We're Learning!
In kindergarten Spanish, we are working with adding and subtracting small, single-digit numbers. We are playing math games focusing on understanding that addition is a situation where we end with more and subtraction is a situation where we end with less. In Spanish reading and writing, we are working on using the letter sounds that we have learned to read and write known and unfamiliar words. In kindergarten English, we are working on applying our concepts of print, letter sound knowledge, and other early reading skills.
Encourage Literacy in Your Home Language
One of the questions I hear most frequently is, "How can I help my child learn to read in their second language?" There is a growing body of research that shows that reading to and conversing with your child in your native language develops a strong cognitive foundation for literacy in their second language. These types of rich experiences will make it easier for your child to learn in their second language, even if they don't have exposure to that language at home.
"Children who learn to read in their native language first will have an easier time learning to read in their second language than children who never learned how to read in their first language (Anstrom, 1999). Children who can read in their native language understand the process of reading, even if they need to learn new letters, sounds, and words to attain reading proficiency in a second language. Children who are learning to read for the first time in their second language have twice as much work to do because they are learning the process of reading from the beginning at the same time that they are learning a new language (Short & Fitzsimmons, 2007)."
