Room 117 Newsletter

A Look at the Year!

Welcome!

Welcome back to JMS, students and parents! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. What is something fun you and your family did this summer? My hope is to have a monthly Room 177 newsletter, highlighting important dates and events we will be participating in during the month. Communication, to me, is very important in building successful, trusting relationships and I hope you feel the same. Do not hesitate to contact me by email or by phone if you ever have any questions or concerns. My contact information was included in the short "Get to Know Me" letter I sent to each household. If you did not receive this or need my contact information again, my email address is peppeyh@sdoj.org, my classroom phone number is 920-674-1353, and my cell phone is 608-332-8769 . Here's to new beginnings and a new school year!

Unique Learning System: A Comprehensive Curriculum for Special Education

What is it?

This year I will be using a curriculum called Unique Learning System. Unique Learning System is an online, interactive, standards-based curriculum specifically designed for students with special needs. Subscribers download and interact with monthly, instructional, thematic units of study. Each unit contains special education lesson plans and interactive materials teachers can implement into classroom learning activities. All materials are created using SymbolStix symbols. The unit lesson plans define three levels of differentiated tasks which accommodate the diversity of learners with significant disabilities.

Connecting Students to the World

Along with Unique Learning System, I will also be using news-2-you in the classroom. With News-2-You, students learn about current events through symbol-supported articles, activities, games and worksheets. All of these instructional materials reinforce the topic of each weekly newspaper. News-2-You delivers fresh news content weekly to educators and students. Included in every edition is a game, puzzle, recipe, joke, Sudoku, think and review page to keep students engaged all week. The newspaper is published in four different reading levels each week. There is always something to challenge every student from the non-reader to the competent reader.
