Mrs. Buechlein's Weekly Newsletter
WEEK OF December 9-13
MEET ROSIE....OUR VISITOR FROM THE NORTH POLE
This week...
- Spelling Test on Thursday this week!
- Daily 1 minute individualized multiplication tests or 5 minute 100 fact multiplication tests.
- Life Science Chapter 4 Test is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 10. Study guides came home on Friday.
- Only two weeks left to meet second quarter AR goals! Please help your child by reminding him/her to read 20 minutes every night!
- Mrs. Monetta, our mindfulness coach, will be spending an hour in our classroom on Friday morning. She will be conducting a sensory lesson with us. Mrs. Monetta has taught us so much about how we can control our feelings and reactions to situations. Please ask your child to share with you what he/she has learned!
- Family Fun Night is this Friday! Hope to see you there!
Items of interest...
- We will be doing a small gift exchange among the students this year. The exchange will be a pair of "fun" socks (holiday or other), with a few small gifts tucked inside the socks (candy, pencils, erasers, small toys). We ask that everyone spend $5-7 on this gift. If you are unable to participate financially or otherwise, please email me and I will make sure your child has a gift to give. Please keep the names a secret, so only label the gift tag with "From: your child's name". Thanks for your help! SOCKS CAN BE BROUGHT IN ANYTIME!
- Please sign the assignment pad nightly.
- Please send a snack to school with your child for the morning.
- Please check with your child to make sure he/she has working headphones/earbuds. This would be a great stocking stuffer if a new pair is needed!

Curriculum Corner
Reading:
- This week is Week 3 of Unit 3. We are focusing on finding the problem and solution in a text. We are also working with synonyms.
- We are reading several folk tales this week! We will learn that most folk tales contain a problem and solution, and they teach a lesson. You will have to ask your child what they learn from Anansi the spider this week!
- Small-Group Reading...ask your child if they have small group reading homework this week.
Spelling:
- Words this week contain MORE r-controlled vowels. Please help your child prepare for the test on Thursday. Spelling City is a great way for your child to practice. The link is at the end of the newsletter. Make sure your child searches for word lists under Amber Fleck.
Grammar/Writing
- We are talking about past-tense verbs this week! We will continue our weekly work with mentor sentences!
In writing, we continue to work on personal narratives.
Students brought home a POW last Friday, a Dear Santa letter. Please help your child make 5 revisions on their draft. POWs are due this Friday.
- We are continuing our study of multiplication. Watch for flashcards in your child's binder. Please study these with your child for 10-15 minutes every night. Thanks for your support at home!! Mastering multiplication in third grade is a necessity for students to thrive in the upper grades.
- We are working on elapsed time this week!! This is a hard concept so your child may need some extra support with homework.
Science:
- Life Science Chapter 4 test, Plant and Animal Adaptations, is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 10. We will begin Chapter 5 on Wednesday, and test before Christmas break.
- There is a Quizlet your child can use to study for our test. Please follow the link at the end of the newsletter.
- We had fun doing a STEM activity last week with bird beak adaptations! I think we all agreed the spoon-beaked bird caught the most food!

Kindness Challenge
This year, students at Ireland Elementary will be completing the Kindness Challenge again. We did this challenge a few years ago, and I am positive we can all complete the challenges this year! This week's challenge is...
Offer to vacuum or dust your house for your parents.
At the end of each week, students who have completed the Kindness Challenge for that week will get to put a sticker up for that act. Kindness is free...sprinkle that stuff everywhere!
